I don't want to add more blocks to the side and then cut them off straight -- I want the blocks to stand alone. Has anyone finished one of these? I plan to machine quilt it. Has anyone tried a facing?

Yes, I have taken a piece of the backing put it right sides together (after it is quilted) and cut the backing so it mimics the blocks. Sew a 1/4" from the edge and turn it right side out. just whip stitch the backing to the back of the quilt.

This is the only pic I have handy; I will take another one when I am on my regular computer. It shows just a small part of it, on my design wall, in the planning stages.

The top is nearly complete now - it's about 45" square. I will probably make it longer.

I was trying to figure out how to do the same thing with my GFG quilt when I get to that stage. Been thinking about it and here is what I think may work for me: I'm going to layer the quilt as far to the edges as I can and keep a straight line then quilt, then I am going to take another flower that was pieced and lay it over the edge one on top of the batting and backing and whip stitch together outer edges and hand sew down the edge covering the backing. I think if I go along the edges around the quilt it will kinda frame the back and keep the hexagon shape on sides of quilt. Hope this makes sense. It's still in the thought stage as I am still piecing hunderds of hexagons. Anyway, maybe this will work for your blocks.

I've done it. It's not that hard. Use bias binding. If you just want to quilt it, then bind, you can.

You did a great job, Jennifer, but I don't think I am up to all of these inside corners. Sue, I think I will try the facing. Did you use a straight edge on the back or did you cut it zig-zag like the edge of the quilt?

Though I know you can use a bias binding to finish the edges ... I fell in love with this method. It looks neat and crisp and is easy to do.

I have done the same thing and it looks fabulous....I like the uneven edges...it gives it character...good luck
