I have just about finished the attaching of Batting and backing for my quilt. A would like advise on tacking the front to the batting and backing so it looks neat and finished. I plan to tack the layers with pins to keep everything neat and stable so nothing moves. Any ideas on the tacking without using the sewing machine? I was going to tack the corners of the blocks with a simple stitch (like when you stitch a button in place) to save time as it's for a gift for Christmas. My other thought was a simple slip stitch randomly just to secure the layers. I look forward to suggestions. Sorry, I don't have any pictures at this time.

Doing the corners of the blocks sounds perfect. Without a pic it's hard to suggest much else.

doing just the corners depends on how big the blocks are and what kind of batting you're using, how far apart does it say the quilting needs to be?

I'm no help in that area as I only use the basting spray and my quilt tops and backs have never offered to shift on me. I love it.

I read all your suggestions. I am trying to figure out the photo system so I can post a picture. I was going to just machine stitch each row but the rows alternate high/low by 3" so the width stitching rows wouldn't look neat across the quilt as they wouldn't all be next to a seam. I will post the photo soon and see what is suggested for the finishing. I have also been reading a lot of patterns to see what the finish instructions suggest. I'll keep plugging away.

With finishing, instructions just say to finish as desired. It's my call but I don't want to over finish and I don't want to do a random slip stitch and have it take away from the look of the quilt.

what kind of batting are you using. that is where you will find how close you have to stitch the quilt together. something like warm and natural is about 10" apart the quilting has to be. definitely a pic would help.

If you think you would like the quilt tacked (sort of like tied) you might check your sewing machine to see if it has the feature for sewing on buttons. Then just stitch your corners or whatever with that stitch and omit the button. Some machines have a small motif like a daisy or circle that could be used in the same way.

Sounds like you have put a lot of work into this baby. I would love to see a photo when you're done.
