First Quilt - Need Help with Sizing
 

I have experience with sewing and have done some basic squares before, but this is the first time I'm attempting a quilt. I am interested in doing one of the two patterns below. I'm not sure how to determine the size.
This is going to be a throw blanket, but I want it to fit myself and my boyfriend. I am 5' and he is 5'10".

Each block is 12" square. He's 5'10". So you want the quilt to be long enough to cover him from neck to tuck under his feet. Let's guess at 6'. That would mean you need 6 blocks on the length without a border. If you figure you need 6'6", then consider adding a 3" border (3 1/2" before sewing).

So that's basically how you do it. Figure out how wide (and tall) you want it to be and round to the next larger foot (or 12", which is the finished (after it's sewed) width and length of each square) or figure adding a border.

So, get out your measuring tape and figure out how big you want it to be. Then figure out how many blocks each way and whether you want to add more blocks or a border to get you to the size that works for you.

Edit: Personally, I would choose the rail fence for the first quilt. You want to make sure you are successful on your first one, or you might never make another one (or finish that first one). The rail fence is easier than the other one.

That hunters is more complicated for a beginner. Save that for another time.

What about figuring out sizing?

OK. I can give you an estimate, but if I were you, I would figure one to fit you two just the way you want it to fit.

Not knowing all the measurements of you two or how "cuddly" you want to make it , I'd make it about 64 wide and 72 Long.

That would be 5 squares wide and 6 squares long. That would make it 60X72, then I'd add a 3 or 4 inch border. If you don't want a border, make it 6 squares wide and 7 squares long.

Do you have any blanket/quilt that is roughly the size you would like your quilt to be? Measure that one to get an idea of what size you'd like.

Sit down with a normal bed sheet or blanket just the way you usually sit. Put one corner of the blanket over you so top and one edge are just where you'd like to use it. Clip a clothes pin or safety pin (maybe with a scrap of fabric) at the width and length that works for you. Take blanket off and measure the area inside the clips.

Not sure what you mean by "figuring out sizing" Do you mean how to figure out how much yardage of fabric you need or do you mean sizing like in starch??

The Rail fence quilt you linked to is a generous throw size measuring 73 x 85 more than adequate to nap under for either you or your boyfriend but both of you together under the same quilt, I would make it larger. More like 85 x 108 or so. Increase all the measurements given on the pattern you linked to by at least 1/3 of a yard per fabric. I hate how they give you a measurement of "341 inches of continuous binding" , I tend to allow 3/4 to 1 yard for binding for a queen size quilt which is about what you will end up with for a quilt 85" x 108"
