I started out with block of the month quilts so I could learn lots of patterns. I have lots of UFOs now. LOL

My first quilt was a baby quilt in 1967 for our first son. It was a kit of baby animals that I embroidered beautifully. I set it together with yellow as we did not know whether babies were boys or girls until they popped out. The quilt is still around-it hangs on the wall of the room in our son's house we occupy when we visit (very frequently). Though I see the flaws I smile because they are so proud of it. Here we are 45 years later and I quilt most every day. This year I am making queen size quilts for two grandsons graduating from high school. Still love to quilt and love to learn new things. The quilts I am making for the boys are quite contemporary but I like the ideas I am using.

My first was October of 2012 - a baby quilt with a contemporary wiener dog on it. Since then I've completed 4 more quilts, mostly generous lap size and have three in various stages of completion right now.

My first quilt was a wall hanging of a fireplace for Christmas. That was 40 odd years ago. One of my DDs still uses it at Christmas. I also still have the pattern.

my first quilt was (oh the shame) was made from polyester fabric samples in the early 80's. It slid off the bed if you just looked at it :-). I started quilting again in the early 2000's with cotton. My first pattern was a crazy quilt.

I took a class at the VoTech so I could make my first quilt for a grandbaby that was on the way! That would have been about 7 years ago. I have made about 5 baby quilts and 2 queen quilts. Working on a large quilt now; just really got back into it the last year or so ~

My first quilt was a wall quilt made with four blocks made by my grandmother in 1990. The newspaper that she used for the paper piecing was dated 1947. Dad had discovered it in going through some of my Mother's things and gave it to me. I was thrilled to have something that she had worked on -- she died in 1951 when I was too young to have any memory of her. My next attempt at quilting was soon after finishing the wall hanging. I made a bed quilt using the churn dash pattern. I was disappointed with the fabrics I used. I had a lot to learn about color choices and contrast, but it had me hooked by then. My quilting journey has been a large part of my life since then. It has saved my sanity at times! LOL

first quilt: shoo fly for daughter that didn't get finished until she was a teen, 2nd Sunbonnet sue for GD, 3rd, overall Sam for GS, 4th: friendship star for daughter's high school graduation, 5th: LC with stars for another daughter's 1st yr college, 6th; Best Friends for a daughter to commemorate her brother who was her best friend, 7th; Fons & Porter, Under the Sea as wedding quilt. Not many quilts for having started collecting and reading quilting magazines in the early 70's. Working on a flannel Split Rail for my bed in AK, and a Lady in the Lake for another daughter

My first quilt was made in 1976. It was just patchwork 6" blocks made of all the fabric scraps I had saved from the clothes I had made for my family since 1959. I then put white backing on it and had everyone sign their names on it and then Tri-Chemed them for posterity. It was great.

My first quilt is still here on the rack in the living room. A very drab log cabin. It makes me laugh. After that I did a Southwest pattern that was really above my skill level and from there there is no end

My very first quilt was a cheater panel my sister gave me. I knew nothing to very little about quilting, sooo I used a poly batting between two pieces of an old mattress pad, then a backing. I'm just glad that my Kenmore liked to sew on heavy fabrics, as it certainly was heavy. However, my daughter loved taking it outside to spread out and play with her Barbies. But my first "real" quilt was a pinwheel made from a Georgia Bonesteel Spinning Spools pattern. I'd seen an ad in a quilt magazine and ordered it - every month or so I would get a pattern, along with the plastic templates to go into a binder. My daughter saw the pinwheel quilt and liked it, so we went and bought fabric, pink, lavendar and aqua. I hand quilted hearts on it, my one and only hand quilted quilt, which she plans to give to our DGD some day. I have literally no idea how many quilts I have made over the years, but it's a lot as I started in the mid 80's. It's the one hobby that I have continued to enjoy for over 25 years.

My first quilt was a machine embroidered "All Star Kids" twin quilt for my granddaughter. I believe I made 9 quilts the first two years I started quilting. All had machine embroidered blocks.
|
My first quilt was a Yellow Brick Road in browns and neutals that I gave to my husband since he liked it so much!
|
My first quilt was a baby quilt for my niece in 2011. So happy I found such an enjoyable hobby for my retirement and this great place to share with fellow quilters.

My first quilt from start to finish was started in 1999 and finished in 2004. It was a star variation quilt for my daughter, started when she graduated high school, finished when she graduated from college. To allisonquilts that quilt you described sure sounds beautiful, do you still have it?

I always wanted to quilt. But I live in a small town and didn't know where to go. I even bought a quilting for dummies book, but couldn't figure out all the terminology. Then about 3 years ago I heard abut the technical college having starting an artisan center in my small town. I checked it out and started taking classes. I am still in open lab classes, and enjoy the social time of quilting. My teacher has everone start with a log cabin. Here is a picture of my first log cabin and the heart was the first thing I did by myself.

My first was a vogue pattern of a clothes line. I have been a sewer for a long time and wanted to make a quilt for my new baby in 1979. I asked every female on both sides of our family for some sort of fabric that I could use. Some sent handkerchiefs, some sent blouses. One even sent a skirt. It is still my favorite quilt. It's been well used by my 4 children and now I'm getting ready to pass it down.

my first real quilt on my own was when I was about 16. I made it out of vintage fabrics and added crocheted butterflies I got at a thift store to it. It was pretty cool. I gave it away to one of my friends. It was just basic squares.
|
I didn't start quilting until after I got married. Maybe even after I had my first child. Hmmm. I can't even remember my first real quilt! I'm going to guestimate at about 14 years? I was making those cross-stitch baby quilts before that.

This is my first time posting. I did my first quilt probably 15 years ago. Then last April or May I made another one and got the "bug". I made two lap quilts and 1 full size quilts for Christmas gifts. I have been enjoying reading this board for the last year. Just decided it was time to add a comment. Thanks for all your wonderful information for us newer quilters.

I made a 'sorta' quilt about 20 years ago; I don't think there was any pattern, I think a cheater panel, some backing, and a pillowcase binding (ie: there was no real "binding" as I recall)...then I cut a ton of pieces out for a 'real' project (tracing around triangle templates...several hundred pieces later, I didn't want to do anymore, and it stayed in a plastic bag for years until I gave it away.)
This past Christmas, my penpal in Oregon decided we should exchange quilts (insert OMG shock face here because I didn't know ANYTHING about "real" quilting, and it was early December, and how the heck was I going to complete a quilt in time for Christmas?!) So I buzzed a seller on etsy...asked her to put together a kit for me because I had NO idea what I needed, or how much I needed...found a simple D9P pattern, and made my way through it. Tied because I didn't know how to "quilt" it. This time, I put a wrap-from-the-back binding on it...so I'm getting better at the binding part, and soon I'll even put a real-live binding on one! That second one actually gave me the quilting bug, so I'm on my way. I wish I'd been interested sooner (like when fabric wasn't 12.99 a yard!). Lots of catching up to do. |
