I am just wondering if I opened Pandora's box today. I just placed a rather large order with fabricdepot.com. They have batiks on sale today for $5.50 a yard. I can't touch that price at my LQS. I do miss actually touching & feeling the fabric but since the weather is so ugly today it may be worth it to stay home & shop online. Sure hope I won't be sorry!!!!

Must be the time of year. I did the same thing, also with fabricdepot.com and some others. Now I just have to make sure I get the packages before DH gets home. They are going to have to get 'lost' in the stash for awhile. Hope we both won't be sorry! Have a good day shopping.

You won't be sorry Dody... Fabric Depot has the BEST customer service that I've seen....
I recently drove 3 hours to visit that store in Portland, thinking that I would buy my Dear Jane book and templates that they have as a set for $25. All they had in the store itself was the book and rulers separately...for a total of $41.98! I asked a clerk about it, and she told me that she couldn't do that. So I skipped buying them.
Got home, went online to order, and found out that I could have ordered online and done an instore pickup. I went balistic, altho I hope that I kept them from knowing that! ;) I did write and complain tho, and they sent me the set, no shipping charge! They also followed up with emails, asking if I could identify the clerk, at no danger to her job, just so they could clarify to her how it should have been done... I couldn't, didn't look at her name tag...so they were going to do a training meeting in the event that it ever happened again.

While I was there, I fondled MANY fabrics...you won't be disappointed in the batiks!! :)

Thanks, Charlee! That is really good to know! I am so glad that they were so good to you, a 3 hour drive is no small undertaking with the price of gas.

I have ordered MANY batiks from Fabric Depot and I have never been disappointed :D:D:D I have been to their store as well. I think that you will be very happy when your order arrives!!!

Online shopping can be so much fun. It's the best when you get those squishies or in my case boxes of fabric. Have fun.

I have shopped at Fabric Depot here in Oregon and the fabric has always been good.

It's important to know what company does what. Once I ordered four different, but complimentary fabrics from Fabric.com. 3 arrived just as I had ordered and one stood out like a sore thumb! I called and we "researched" my order and she maid "Oh my!" She put in an order for the correct fabric at no shipping to me and told me to either use the wrong fabric for another project or ( and get this.. ) donate it to a church who makes quilts for missions. Awesome!

i am thinking about ordering online but am hesitant to put my credit card details out there! You hear of so many people who get hacked so someone please convince me it is safe to shop online!!
We have very limited quilt shops here and not much variety in fabric which is also very expensive.I have seen such gorgeous fabric and must have notions when looking online so i really need to shop online!!

A lot of online stores have an option to phone your order in, rather than giving info on the net. Be sure to tell them you will give them the info each time you order if you don't want your card info in their system. Not all keep a record, but some do. Also some sell names of clients, but you can request they not sell yours. Happy shopping!

I can't wait for my order to arrive! Haven't heard yet when they shipped it but I hope it's soon. I am well into the quilting on my latest quilt & already planning my next one. Life is good!

I personally would never purchase online with my own credit card or ATM card.

To get around this, I purchase a Visa card from my local store and use that to purchase the item.

I used to be a programmer and know for a fact how fast you could get hacked. The business (which was government) was hacked within 20 min. We had to bring the whole system down. If that can happen, anything can.

Remember even Sarah Palin's e-mail was hacked when she was running for president.

I'm sorry to be so leary, but I worked with some weirdo's who thought it was a game to hack. To them it was like solving a puzzle.

To me it is much better to pay the extra fee then to have my identity stolen.

I looked at the batiks and they were beautiful. Did not order tho and it is probably too late now.

Uh oh, you've discovered a fun outlet. And you can shop in your pjs! I think you'll be thrilled with your online purchase.

I have one credit card I use for online purchases. I don't use it for anything else. Reputable credit card companies will not charge you for purchases you didn't make. Just keep an eye on your charges and you'll be fine. No one is going to steal your identity with your credit card number.

And if you're really paranoid, open a PayPal account. You only give PayPal your credit card number. They process payments for you and never share your credit card information with the vendor.

A store with good customer service is to be treasured. I once ordered from a quilt shop and got the wrong order. I called and got the owner who acted like it was my fault. She asked me to send the purchase back and she'd reimburse me. It cost me $5.40 and my time and effort to return it. She sent me the right order with a $5 bill stuffed in it. IMO she should have stuffed a FQ in too. Needless to say, I won't be ordering anything else from that store.

As for using credit cards--I have a card I use only for online and telephone purchases. I have a different one I use at local stores. I figure if the online one got hacked, I's still have the other one.

I have to respond to the posters who don't want to put their credit card information online. Every time you hand to a clerk or waiter, they have the chance to use the information, sell to someone else or just give it away. Someone who is intent can take the information from your mail or garbage. And the information is already online - every credit card company in the world store their records in electronic files.

If you use only sites that are secure and encripted, you are about as safe as you can be.

lindy 02-10-2010 04:55 PM

The reason I won't use our credit card online is because someone did steal my brother's card # from online and racked up a few thousand dollars before it was caught!

pinklissamel 02-10-2010 06:37 PM

Oh wow they are having a sale SCORE!!!!!! i just bought some very bright batiks after saying i need to not buy for a while and use some of what I have ha, ha that didnt happen, I could not resist. Just wasnt gonna happen not today anyways. Yippee hope they ship quick cant wait to get them!!!!

Beachbound 02-11-2010 08:05 AM

Just got a phone call from them~ they only had 1 yard left of one of my fabrics. Bummer!!! Silly me told them to ship it anyway without thinking to add another yard of something else.
