First time working with flannel question.
 

This is the first quilt that I will be making using flannel. Should I press the seams open as opposed to pressing to one side? Seems like the flannel may make very thick lumps if pressed to one side.

I'd press the seams open, will probably help to limit some bulk.

I have pressed the seams both ways. Be sure to pre-wash because flannel often shrinks a lot, and colors can run.

I press open , and also use a seam allowance bigger than 1/4 inch. Flannel is more loosely woven .. so that why the bigger seam allowance. At minimum I use 3/8 ... sometimes as large as 1/2 depending on the flannel.
And as Dunster said .. prewash/dry. Shrinkage is so much more than regular quilting cotton.

When piecing flannel, after washing and drying it twice to shrink, I heavily starch it before cutting. My method is to mix a 1:1 solution of Sta-Flo liquid laundry starch and water, "paint" this on the yardage using a large wall painting brush, toss in dryer, then iron with steam. This makes the flannel quite stiff and stable, so that it can be pieced accurately. It's a good idea to use a seam allowance larger than 1/4" if the pattern allows, and I like to press those seams open.

What a great idea, Prism99! I HATE spray starch, probably wouldn't object to doing it this way.:thumbup:
