Five inch charm
How can you get five inch charm squares that have pinked edges and ones that don't to match up? If they don't match up exactly, what can be done to match them?
|
Are you saying that some charms are 5" and others are more or less? Or are you asking whether to measure to peaks or valleys of pinked charms? If the latter, just be sure that you're consistent when joining non-pinked charms to pinked charms.
|
Have you placed pinked ones on top of non-pinked ones to see how they line up? Typically, when matching up, you want the outer tips of the pinking to match the cut edge of the non-pinked pieces.

Trim them. I consider a charm packs as 4.5" squares. Just like when
you buy yardage, you have to trim a little. Same thing applies to charm packs. |

Then I would lay one of the pinked squares on top of the straight edged ones and see how they lined up. I would "believe" the straight-edged ones and use them as my guide as to how I joined the pink ones. Caveat: I have never bought pinked or unpicked five inch squares - so - my comments may not apply. |

That seems to defeat the purpose of buying five inch squares.

Anyway, since I starch all my fabrics before cutting, I know I will never get a perfect 5" square after starching. I don't think I've had a charm pack where they were all perfect 5" square even before starching. You know those TV shows where they make everything looks sooo easy using pre-cuts. It ain't that easy...it's just a show. LOL |
Jenny from Missouri Star quilt Co. says to use the "valleys"....but it's easier for me to just lightly trim off the peaks. The time it takes to do this is worth the hassel of matching up correctly.

I never buy charms or any pre cuts. IF I DID, I would just measure to see where the 5" is --- The high points or the low points. That would only make sense to me.
|
I just measured a 5" square that was pinked and it measured exactly 5", so I always match point to point and if some don't have points I match all with the plain cut ones. I believe as long as you are consistent with how ever you do it, it will be OK
