flannel baby blanket

I need ideas for a flannel baby blanket, has any one taken just the flannel yardage and made the blanket from the whole piece and not cut into squares or strips? I am open to any ideas and suggestions.

Thanks.

Yes I've done that. I used a yard of cotton and a yard of flannel and birthed it without batting. I quilted it by starting at one edge and sewing 1 1/2" from the edge all the way across until 1 1/2" from the next edge, pivoting to sew the next line, etc. until I got to the middle. Very easy, very quick and it's been one of my DDs favorite blankets to use for her kids.

My friend use to make what are called receiving blanket. She use to do decorative stitching around the edge.

two pretty fabrics and just some plain stitching in the middle to hold them together. unless of course, you're a talented LA'er.

I've also tied a flannel baby quilt. Sometimes those little ones like to touch and feel the little ties.

I make these all the time for the new babies in our church. Great opportunity to use those decorative stitches that usually sit idle on my sewing machine. I don't "quilt" the middle, but make a large X through it to hold the layers together when washing.

Check out Jenny Doan's Self-Binding Receiving Blanket video on YouTube!! Needs a 40" square and a 30" square of coordinating flannels (measurement AFTER washing flannel in hot water and drying on high to get shrinkage out of the way)...........Blanket takes less than an hour and they are really WONDERFUL.........and very addictive..........My daughter had 5 in-laws who were expecting this year, and I made 2 for each family.............

How about a rag quilt? Different colors, instead of an "X" to hold all three layers, use letters or shapes! It's a tactile, warm quilt!

I've made a couple dozen of these. They are so easy and adorable!

I've done the self binding receiving blankets.
Also had a customer that handed me 2 2yd pieces of cotton and asked me to just fold it over with bat in middle and FMQ and she planned to add satin binding.

My DD has three children and she loved the thinner flannel blankets to quilts with batting. One yard flannel front and back, longarm panto, and serged around. I make three for each baby..they are easy to use and wash and dry often. Her babies were born in cold weather so flannel worked..then it gets very soft.

Yes, I have made (literally) dozens for DD, DDIL and friends. I buy 2 45" lengths of different flannels, wash them, iron, measure them and square them up so they match the smallest measurement (my ladies prefer the blankets square). I then put them right sides together, fold them in 1/4's and round the corners, then stitch around the edges (1/2" seam), leaving an opening so I can turn it right sides out (birth it), trim the rounded corners with pinking shears. Iron the birthed top, folding in the seam allowance for the opening. I then top stitch about 1/8' from the edge, closing the opening and do whatever quilting I feel like doing in the middle. When I get in the zone, if the flannel is washed and ironed I can make several in an hour.

Oh I would use minky on the back of a flannel quilt for a baby! They love the feel of minky!
