Flannel backing

Can flannel be used for the backing when machine quilting? If it can, should it be pre-washed?

I have used it. Works great, yes you should wash and dry before using, I do it twice. After last drying I starch before cutting. I have had flannel shrink up to 4 inches, and it seams to hold dye more easily than other quilting fabric.

I have used flannel on several quilts, tops and backs. I always wash and dry it first, flannel sometimes shrinks a lot and it might distort your top.

Agree with the others - shrinkage and bleeding can be problems, but flannel makes a wonderful quilt back. You can quilt it on a DSM or longarm, no problems, maybe a little thicker and a little more prone to puckers, but starch can help with that.
