I am making a baby quilt and want to use a flannel backing. The quilt top is 100% cotton. Is there anything that I need to know when using a flannel backing with a cotton top?

Wash the flannel at least once, to shrink it.

Yes, it will shrink....a lot! You must pre-wash it several times, even if you don't pre-wash the cotton.

I always wash/dry flannel atleast twice, it tends to shrink a lot more than quilting cotton :D:D:D

I do the same. The dryer especially seems to shrink it a lot.

flannel backed quilts are wonderful! pre-wash, use good quality flannel (double sided if possible) and you will love the results. when i use good (benartex double sided flannel) i have found one pre-wash is enough...when using lesser - single sided inexpensive flannel you will want to wash it a couple times...problem with the lesser quality flannels is ... they pill....get those tiny (balls) all over the surface. this does not happen when using good quality flannel.

Oh. Forgot to mention I also starch the flannel heavily before sandwiching the quilt (if I am going to machine quilt). Keeps the flannel from puckering.
