Flannel backing vs quilt fabric backing?
 

For those of you who use flannel backing, do you feel it is as strong and long lasting as good quilt fabric for a quilt that is going to used and washed heavily? It just doesn't seem like it to me, though I love the feel of it.

I use flannel a lot for quilt backing. I use the flannel that is a bit thicker than pj/shirt flannel. I've had good luck finding it at Marshall Dry Goods. Wears like iron and washes beautifully. I do prewash before using it so that I can shrink it. Sometimes JoAnns will have it but not always.

I made a full quilt out of the heavier flannel 12 years ago and still using it! It gets washed about every 2 to 3 weeks and it still in good shape.

The flannel I use is the same quality as cotton quilt fabric. I purchase both at my LQS.

As long as you're buying a good quality flannel, absolutely. I love flannel for backing. Many of the quilters in my town use it, and all seem happy.

Our hardware store brings in quilt store quality flannel in 108" widths, even though they don't carry any other fabric anymore, because they still sell enough volume of the flannel to make it worthwhile.

I made this quilt in 2001 and it is all flannel, even the binding. It is on the back of the recliner and used and washed frequently with no sign of wear. It was a very good quality flannel (not flimsy like some that pill)[ATTACH=CONFIG]574760[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]574761[/ATTACH]

It's good to hear these positive statements because I do like the coziness of flannel and that fact that it's less likely to slide around which is why I use it for prayer quilts. If someone is ill enough to need a prayer quilt, they don't need to be chasing it around.

I've used Moda flannel with two quilts and have had no problems. It feels so cozy.

I love flannel backed quilts and use it often. I purchase good quality flannel just like good quality regular cottons. It holds up great. My oldest granddaughter has been dragging her favorite quilt around for 16 years ( she's had it since she was 5) it's been on road trips, to camp, picnics, sleepovers, I've never had to do any repairs on it. She has others, but she loves that one the most.

I made us a couple of flannel quilts for TV use. I made a Grandson and Granddaughter one also for same use. They use them and so do we in winter and washed often. They don't look like it. The flannel isn't any particular brand or kind, not expensive. I don't care how long they last, just know they will out last me.

I use flannel a lot and also minkie, no problems. Some longarmers don't like minkie, not sure why but i have a sitdown sweet 16, and it's fine.
