Flannel Batting
 

I have read that flannel is for a light summer quilt. I bought some flannel and am using it with a quilt top but it seems heavy. It isn't light. I guess it will be light weight for warmth? I hand quilt and it quilts easy but just seems like it is going to make a heavy quilt. Just for the record I have used all different kinds of batting and for me it looks like Dream Cotton or good old 80/20 is easy to use and easy to quilt. I have used Warm and Natural and liked it until I used Dream Cotton. I have used wool on two quilts and I like how easy the needle goes through and the puffiness but it slides on me. It doesn't grip the fabric like the other battings do and I have to be very careful not to get puckers in the back. So I would like opinions on the flannel batting and the batting of choice for you hand quilters and why?

i have used flannel as batting on some charity quilts. they seem light weight to me. my own preference is a heavier quilt. but the flannel does work.

Me too. the first time using flannel as a batting. I'm in the process of making my grandson a tshirt quilt and will be using flannel for the batting because he lives in southern Arizona. We do not need heavy quilts here lol. Plus the tshirt quilt top is heavy. I hope it works.

It could be the type of flannel you are using. Some flannels are very lightweight; others are quite thick and heavy. Do you know the brand?

The flannels I've come across vary from quite lightweight to the chamois type of flannel which is very heavy.

In this region flannel would not be warm enough. I prefer high loft polyester batting. Warm without the weight.

I must have bought some heavy flannel. I don't know what I bought. I didn't realize there was different weights of flannel. Live and learn. I like quilting the flannel. I am just making a scrap throw quilt. It is 60 X 60. It will be good. I just was curious.

I think that you could never wrong using Dream Cotton.

I put flannel backing on most of my quilts. I buy quilt store quality. The first quilt I ever made was back in 1976. I put a flannel sheet on the back and it still looks great after all the abuse it has seen.
