Flannel for Binding
 

Has anyone ever used flannel for binding? I'm working on a quilt that's flannel on both sides and would like the binding to match. If anyone has experience with this I'd appreciate your comments and advice. I'm thinking a double fold would be pretty bulky so maybe just single. Also, how did it hold up with washing? This will be a baby quilt. Flannel has been pre washed.

I've used flannel many times for binding, since I make a lot of flannel quilts. I've always done my flannel binding a little wider than I make regular cotton binding; 2 1/2"-2 3/4" i starch my flannel well Before cutting. I fold it in half, press then attach as normal, machine stitched to front with a 3/8" seam ( just a bit wider than 1/4" ) fold to back and hand stitch. So far even ones 15 + years old have held up. I do purchase really good quality double sided flannels.

Men's good quality flannel shirts hold up for quite a while on the collars and cuffs.

I bound my first flannel quilt yesterday. After attaching the 2 1/2 binding to the back I zigzagged around all the edges the lessen the bulk. I then machine sewed the binding down on the front. It turnout out great and I think it should hold up well.

where would I look to buy "good quality double sided flannel"? Thank you

I have a flannel quilt with flannel binding that I was gifted. I've had it several years and washed it quite a bit and the flannel binding has held up well.

I made a flannel quilt for my son about 10 years ago. It has been washed many, many times, and I'm going to have to replace the binding soon. It is wearing quite a bit at the corners. However, it's entirely possible that the same thing could have happened if I'd used standard quilting cotton for binding. It's a sad problem, isn't it, to have a quilt so loved and used that you have to replace the binding? :D

I believe the brand name is Mammoth Flannel. My LQS had some last year & it went fast. It is very nice & soft & you can't tell which side is which.

Flannel wears way faster and it is bulky. I do not like it. If at all possible, if you want to stick with flannel, roll the back to the front or the front to the back.

When I used flannel for binding, it was fine when I hand sewed it, but when I machine sewed it I found struggled with it due to it being thicker than regular fabric.

I think it's a "happy problem". LOL

I like flannel as binding on a flannel backed quilt. I haven't found it wears excessively. I did use binding strips of 2 1/2 inches, and I joined them on the diagonal to lessen bulk at the seams.
