Flannel Fat Quarters

I know flannel shrinks, and sometimes quite a bit....but do you prewash a FQ? I am worried about it fraying badly or the fabric becoming distorted. If I pink the edges, will that be enough to keep the fraying down to a minimum?

If you have a serger that would be best.

I recently washed some flannel and I did a tight zigzag 1/4" from the edge and it raveled past the stitching - very disappointed. Next time I will dust off the serger!

I would probably serge or zig zag. Regular fq's I don't bother to do this as I usually don't plan to use every last inch. With the typical shrinkage of flannel and it being a looser weave, I'd definitely wash but I'd think you'd end up with a real mess of strings without treating the edges fairly well. Tedious process but I think well worth the effort in this case.
