I was wondering if anyone has ever put flannel & fleece together for a raggy quilt? I wanted to make my grandson a raggy quilt with Minnesota Team logos, for our 4 major sports teams. I could not find anything in flannel, but I found the team logo's in fleece. Then I couldn't find the solid colors in fleece, just in flannel. So, do you think it could work to use the fleece on the front and flannel on the back and tie the cut pieces on the front together and after a couple washings trim them to the same length?

I don't think I would trust the flannel to just tie it.

If I was doing it -

1) Wash everything before doing anything - in my experience, different fabrics have different amounts of shrinkage

2) Sew the fleece pieces together and make one side of it

3) Sew the flannel pieces together and make the other side of it

4) At this point, you could do any of several things -

a) do the sew right sides together, turn inside out, and tie

b) sew wrong sides together - make a fringy edge

c) sew wrong sides together - bind

d) sew wrong sides together - fold one edge over and make a self binding

Oh no, I wouldn't just tie it. I would sew it all togther first like a regular flannel raggy quilt.

It would not rag very much, especially if you only use one layer of flannel.

I don't think I would attempt it. the flannel gets raggier, while the fleece remains the same. Flannel will shrink and lose it's color, while the fleece won't. Just a thought.

Well, duh!!! Maybe I should try a small 4 square quilt and see what happens! Maybe 8 inch squares.

I put flannel and fleece together all the time. But I wouldn't do raggy, the flannel frays too much. I sewed the squares with wider (3/8" or 1/2") seams to the inside. I also use one large piece of fleece. Then I would either sew the 2 layers with 3" or 4" rows of stitching or tie. For a child the stitching is best. Hope this answers your questions.

I like bearisgrey (A) sew eash side, then right sides together. sew around leaving a space to turn inside out and tie it close, maybe a hand width apart. It sounds cute!

I used fleece as the backing and fold over binding on a flannel quilt for a grandbaby. It turned out really cute & snuggly. I haven't tried it for a shaggy quilt but I don't why it wouldn't work. Prewash the flannel first in hot water and a hot dryer and I would used 2-3 squares of flannel so it's really fuzzy.

Around here, folks are taking 2 contrasting pieces of fleece and putting them back to back then fringe cutting all 4 sides and knotting one piece to the other with the fringe. It looks good when they use very highly contrasting fleece.
