Hi there, does anyone have any ideas for a couple of kids flannel quilts? I'm looking for something bsides the rag quilts too. I have some flannel fabric groups, one is called Camp Canoe (by marcus brothers) and the other one is a cute cat print, looking for some quick and easy couch cuddler quilts for my kids, to use these flannels up. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

You could use flannel for almost any pattern , just be sure to wash and dry it a couple of times to get all the skrinkage out of the way

And use at least 3/8 inch seams. The lighter/flimsier the flannel, the wider the seams should be to minimize/prevent the seams from pulling out.

Our group alternates flannel pieced blocks with solid color flannel blocks. They look real cute.

I made a baby trip around the world using smaller strips, it turned out really cute. I prewashed everything, but I didn't increase the 1/4" seam. It was nice thick flannel.

I did a Christmas flannel using Disappearing 4 Patch. I posted a picture a week or so ago. It used 8 inch flannel squares and I used flannel sashing and borders with a fleece back so no batting. It turned out nice!

I've done Take 5 and Yellow Brick Road. They came out nice.

I have used DNP, Nine Patch along with snowball blocks, and rail fence with flannels

I make a bar quilt out of flannel. 3 x 7 inch pieces stripped together, than I usually just channel quilt it. Goes quick and is durable, too.

I just did a Rail Pattern using flannel and it came out great. I did have to adjust my needle position to sew scant 1/4 seams with the flannel. Easy and quick.

Thanks for the ideas! Do you need to use batting as well in a flannel quilt? Or just another layer of flannel in between? What works the best? I was also thinking of hand quilting with big stitches.

Sadiemae 08-29-2010 06:29 PM

I put batting in mine, but I longarm quilt them. Can't help with hand quilting.

I made QUILLOWS FOR MY GRANDKIDS AND THEY LOVED THEM.I did not put batting in them but you could.

I try to avoid patterns that have a lot of points in them when I am working with flannels. Flannels stretch more than a flat cotton fabric does and makes the points harder to get right. I like Yellow Brick Road or A Fat Quarter Shuffle pattern for flannels.

I made my Grand kids flannel on flannel, did a "girlie" stich around the outer edge for GD and a turtle stich for GS. They used them for their airplane ride to FL.
