Good Morning - I just finished a flannel quilt for my family in COLD Fargo, NC. Any recommendations regarding batting to make sure this quilt keeps them warm?

Midwestmary 12-04-2010 05:25 AM

I've made several flannel quilts - most often I've used Warm and Natural cotton. It makes for a heavy quilt, but very warm. I've also used a thinner batt my LQS sells - not as warm. I hear it is very cold up there in Fargo - I'm sure your friend will appreicate a cozy quilt!

wool batting--use joann's 50% coupon. one of the few things that isn't on sale this weekend.

cjtinkle 12-04-2010 05:48 AM

Oh yes, definitely wool! It's wonderful!

bevster 12-04-2010 06:07 AM

thank you so much for your suggestions. Just pulled out my JoAnn's coupon - GREAT!

I use warn and natural, and quilt on both sides of each seam to ensure it doesn't ravel.

Sadiemae 12-04-2010 10:52 AM

If you have used flannel for top and bottom, I don't think you will have a problem with anyone keeping warm.

When I made my daughters rag quilt I used a poly batting in the middle, and the flannel was both sides. She sweats under the thing it's so warm.

I am of the old school about wool. I can't use it cause it gives me hives if it touches my skin. However, in batting it wouldn't be a problem. Question? I thought wool always shrank when washed. How can you use it in a quilt?

bevster 12-05-2010 05:18 AM

Kathy, I ended up using Warm and Natural rather than wool. I figured the flannel used and batting would be plenty warm enough. Thank you for your reply - Bevster

Look for the Hobbs brand, washable wool batting. Very nice.

Flannel Quilt ready to be wrapped for Christmas gift. The "pink" is actually red/white check, also used for the backing. Various lengths of each fabric used in the binding.

it actualy doesnt shrink up as bad as people think it does. Also makes the quilting pop.

bevster 12-05-2010 07:46 AM

What a beautiful quilt! So colorful, which I love. Thanks for the tip on Hobbs.

Do you buy your flannel in stores or order online? I haven't had the best luck finding flannel in the Houston area. I guess it's a little too warm and humid for flannel down here on the Gulf coast, but I have a 17 year old that wears sweatshirts during the summer. :)

That was my first thought too. I have visions of the not so small sweater that came out of the wash in a size that would have fit my 15 lb dog. Uh oh!!

This is a gorgeous Quilt

I always order on-line, quality is far surpased JoAnns or Hancock. I have used Debbie Mum fabric and if I can find Moda or another name brand at JoAnns. I ususally find good sales on the net for name brand fabric. I always shop using this website, it goes to over 200 quilt shops.

This particular flannel quilt I used Wilmington Essential Flannel from Fabric Shack.

North Dakota????? Is there really such a place....

j/k, while living in South Dakota that was a running joke to some of our friends who hailed from that very cold state.

I would use something nice and fluffy. I do know they make a thicker batting, but with my machine I don't use it.

flikkem 12-05-2010 10:18 AM

Beautiful!

flikkem 12-05-2010 10:19 AM

Hey - I resemble that remark. I hail from North Dakota. It's a great place to be from - you can adjust to anything after that. I don't miss the cold.

Deezie 12-05-2010 12:45 PM

There is a Fargo NC? My son lives in Fargo, ND and it's cold....You might try a lightweight flannel for backing.

danade 12-05-2010 02:08 PM

Wow! GREAT flannel quilt!

Sounds really wonderful! I never thought of flannel on backing and cotton on quilt top. Thanks for the tip!

Wool is wonderful, but make sure you check how much it will shrink the first time it is washed. Mine shrank more than I am happy with, so now I pre-wash all my wool batting (gentle, warm water) then about 15 minutes in a warm dryer is all I need. The first time I forgot to wash on gentle and had to pull pills of wool off my batting! Lovely, warm quilts!!!

IBQUILTIN 12-05-2010 08:14 PM

I have made a whole bunch of flannel quilts for the guys in our family, and used warm and natural in every one of them, and they all say that just the one quilt on the bed is plenty until the temp is below 0.

bevster 12-06-2010 12:34 AM

Thanks Farmquilter! By the way I see you are a proud Mom of daughters in the USAF. I retired with 29 years as a proud member of the USAF. Bevster

My current quilt is flannel on front and back. I am using warm and natural for batting. It will be heavy and so snuggly!

doowopddbop 12-06-2010 06:54 AM

my favorite is Hobbs poly-down - a bit more of a loft than cotton, and holds in the heat.

marlene tarzwell 12-06-2010 02:17 PM

I made a large one for my son and I put a heavy blanket in it and he just loves it.

lberna 12-06-2010 03:31 PM

My flannel quilt is flannel on top and backing. I used a poly batting and it is wonderfully warm. I hand quilted it using a thicker thread (I think it was called "Jean thread") and I made slightly longer stitches. Small stitches and regular quilting thread gets buried in the nap of the fabric.

skywalker 12-06-2010 06:16 PM

I just finished a flannel one and used warm/naturalI live in the Rocky Mnts and I'm sure this will be plenty warm
