I am going to start on my first rag quilt today for one of my nephews. For some reason I had it in my head to use three layers of flannel, using flannel as the middle of the sandwich instead of batting. Workable? Doable? All wrong? Thank you ladies!

Also - am I crazy to make the squares as small as 4 1/2"?

Sounds good to me!

Yes, that's the way I made mine. :)

Thanks Toucan! Did you make the middle square smaller or just leave it the same size to make it extra raggy?

That's how I make mine. Only I use 6 1/2 inch squares. I cut all of my pieces the same size. Sometimes the middle will shift a bit or stretch but you can't tell once it's clipped and washed. By keeping the middle piece the same size, it adds a layer of depth to your "rags" - meaning the color of the center square comes out and blends nicely with the other colors. So, make sure it is a complimentary color scheme!

6 1/2 inches is the smallest I go. I haven't tried 4 1/2.

I re-thought the 4 1/2". I'm using my 6" x 24" ruler and am gonna go for a 4" square with 1" rag all around.

That would be wonderful. What a warm and cuddly quilt.

Are you going to do the X across to hold the batting ( flannel) in place ? By making it smaller than the outside that is one way to keep it in its proper place so you don't get bunching

It will work just fine, be sure to show us your creation
