I'm working on a large quilt, about 65" x 70" and was going to buy batting, as I'm just about ready to start quilting. Then I remembered I have a queen size flannel sheet I don't need anymore. The thought struck me that I could use that sheet for batting. Anyone done this before? I will be using the quilt to wrap up in on the couch, so it will get quite a bit of use. Having the flannel inside sounds really nice to me. It will be thin, but warm, I think. Any thoughts?

Make sure the flannel has been washed and dried until it stops shrinking. Other than that you are good to go!

Sounds like a good idea.

I love using flannel as batting, especially in baby quilts. SOOOO soft and "pliable" no matter how close you quilt it. And yes they are warm.

Sabra, flannel works really well as long as it is preshrunk. You just end up with a lighter, slightly less fluffy quilt. Because flannel is so sturdy, you do not have to quilt is as closely as you do batting.

Works well.

The quilt can be tied, too, and the flannel won't shift or wad up.

yep, that is what I used for my southern family members!

I made a king size quilt for my daughter - one of the first I quilted on my frame. Putting batting inside made it too thick to fit in the throat of the machine so I used flannel. She loves it and says it is very warm. I would not hesitate to use it again.
