Flashback to '80's?

1 Attachment(s)
Digging through my scrap drawer for my scrappy quilt I happened upon this old friend. I am going to cut it all up for neutrals in my Twist nd Shout scrappy but I will use the wrong side for a more subtle look. I want a good contrast with my darks to keep the pattern clear. I am guessing 1980's, what do you think?

feline fanatic 02-05-2016 10:33 AM

I started quilting in the early 90's and I definitely had that one in my stash. It was from JoAnnes. I know because I was several years into my quilting journey before I even knew such thing as a quilt shop existed! LOL So all of my early purchases were from JoAnnes. Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if that particular print is still around so it very well could date from the 80s but I got mine in the early 90s.

cjsews 02-05-2016 10:48 AM

Hey ya. I used that well before I started quilting. Like seeing an old friend😊

So what is the consensus, A (wrong side) or B ( right side) . I tried it do the blocks identical but of course when working with scraps, you run out of certain prints.

KLO 02-05-2016 11:13 AM

I don't think it will matter in the end with all those scraps involved. No one will even notice. That being said, I like A better but that fabric right side looks closer to sort of "matching" the piece two places below it in B .... assuming the photo is fairly true to the fabric colors. Again in the long run, it probablly won't matter.

Do you cut those fabric bars on an angle just the way they look in the block and carefully sew them together or do you have another method of piecing these blocks? I do love the look of your blocks!

Tartan 02-05-2016 11:36 AM

I cut 5 dark 2X5 inch rectangles and 5 light 2X5 inch rectangles. I lay the light wrong side down on the dark in a upside down L shape like you join binding, draw the 45* line, stitch on the line, check to make sure it is a perfect join and then trim away the corner triangle to the 1/4 inch seam.
I thought the stripes would bother me but B is growing on me.

Late 80's early 90's my mom made my daughter the most darling pair of overall out of this fabric she was born in 90 and she was not walking yet. also I like the right side just a little better.

Bluebonnets 02-05-2016 12:59 PM

Either way is good but I like the right side better. Still getting used the concept that I bought both sides of the fabric, lol. I'm working on it.

Dina 02-05-2016 03:04 PM

I like the wrong side better. It makes a slightly better contrast to your darks...but either would look good. Maybe you want to use both sides?

Dina

suern3 02-05-2016 03:14 PM

I like right side better, a little "crisper" look, but actually on my PC screen there is very little difference. I like your blocks.

mom-6 02-05-2016 06:02 PM

Since you're using a variety of fabrics, I'd use the lighter side when you need greater contrast with a slightly lighter 'dark' and go with the front side for the really dark ones.

I like the B side better too. I like the idea of using the backside only when you need a sharper contrast.

Jeanne S 02-05-2016 06:54 PM

I vote for the left (wrong side up) just because of the greater contrast. But the difference is subtle and either one works nicely!

just_the_scraps_m'am 02-05-2016 07:08 PM

definitely the wrong side is less noticeable/more subtle

BETTY62 02-05-2016 07:08 PM

I like the right side best. Love the design you are using.

quilttiger 02-06-2016 03:15 AM

The right side looks appealing because the color is more compatible as a contrast. The wrong side is kinda dull, and it seems to drag the project down. Love the pattern!

jmoore 02-06-2016 03:34 AM

I like B better too... the colors play nicely with the others. Funny, the fabric looks great in your block but in the pieces of scrap you first photographed, it reminds you of wallpaper from the 80's LOL

southernmema 02-06-2016 05:37 AM

I vote right side.

WMUTeach 02-06-2016 06:05 AM

I inherited my sister-in-laws stash and I found some of this fabric. Some of you board members have it now. I included in in my 2.5 square swap, Sweet Treats birthday swap. Enjoy it everyone! From my stash to yours!

WMUTeach 02-06-2016 06:07 AM

I vote B. I don't care for the "fuzzy" look of the print reversed. My opinion only! :o

That's what I was thinking too.

Mariposa 02-06-2016 06:39 AM

I vote for B. Though both work ok... ;)

AlvaStitcher 02-06-2016 07:18 AM

Thanks for explaining how you put the strips together. I admired the picture you posted a few days ago and wondered how it was done. I really like it. My choice is B

Jo Anne B. 02-06-2016 07:20 AM

I like the right side better too, looks crisper., better definition.

sulyle 02-06-2016 09:34 AM

I had that fabric. I think it was the late 1980's. I like the right side better but I agree that there's not much difference. Great looking block whichever side you decide to use.

MargeD 02-06-2016 09:40 AM

It's definitely about that era and I remember it having made doll dresses, and lots of other crafts with it. There are some fabrics that stand the test of time and I think this is one of them.

ManiacQuilter2 02-06-2016 09:46 AM

I think I have that print in my stash. I worked for House of Fabric part time ONLY to get the 25% employee discount even on top of the 50% off when the calicos went on sale. I bought WAY TOO MUCH!!

crafty pat 02-06-2016 10:04 AM

I like it both ways. Whatever you choose it is going to be a beautiful quilt. I think the late eighty's into the ninety's for the age of the fabric. Back then we didn't have as much of a choice as we do today. When a fabric came out it was on the market for a much longer time than today. When you see something you like it is good to get it as it won't be out long then it is so hard to track it down.

I agree with you on the crisper look. looks good!

Jingle 02-06-2016 06:02 PM

I don't have any of that fabric. If I did I would be using a lot of it.

coopah 02-07-2016 05:18 AM

I like B better. Late into the conversation...but I follow the rules (generally). Just step back and see what it looks like from a distance.

M cubed 02-08-2016 04:57 PM

I like B better. JMO, but I think the pattern is tooo fuzzy on the wrong side.

zozee 02-08-2016 09:36 PM

It's a blast from the past for sure! Be still my 80's heart! I say keep it authentic by showing its "true colors" .

DOTTYMO 02-08-2016 11:33 PM

My vote B the right side.

Well said,zozee!! I totally agree!!

TexasSunshine 02-13-2016 08:24 AM

I think I still have some of that in my stash.

quilterpurpledog 02-13-2016 09:18 AM

OK, I still have some of that fabric. I think it is bound for scrappy as I can't think of anything else for it. That was the country look for sure. By the way, in your examples above I like the right side better because it has a more distinct look.

zennia 02-13-2016 09:38 AM

guess we all have some of that fabric laying around. At the time I loved it. It looks good in your scrappy.
