A quilt that is wonky is a "problem in the area" to fold neatly.

Ruffled borders, uneven side lengths, volcanoes - just some of the things that make a folded quilt look messy - and hard to fold up.

Does it really matter? Probably not as much as if the sun quit shining, but I still like my folded quilt to be "neat".

Any one else have "a thing" about this?

I have several of DH's tiny piece quilts that did not come out square or rectangular despite my best efforts. I don't know what to do with them. They are wall hangings so it is pretty obvious when they don't hang "straight".

I avoid folding almost entirely if it is too wonky. Then it is draped over something. If I have to fold it, I fold it like fitted sheets with no edges out. Yes, it bugs me but not enough to redo it. Although I have been known to remove borders entirely if the wave too much making a smaller quilt.

What's a "volcano"?

When an area makes a cone - it sometimes happens when many seams come together like in a Lone Star.

Or an area poofs up - a lot - and won't flatten.

I fold my top before doing any layering to see if that is laying flat and "square" -

I just measured my quilt top - it is 1/4" longer than it is wide, but it is consistent so I'm leaving it. The baby won't notice as long as the sides are straight and the corners are 90 degrees. It will fold nicely.

Volcanos, huh? When I first started quilting other people's tops, I was doing work for a quilt shop. She sent me a Texas Star with all the little diamonds coming together in the middle. When I laid it out flat on the floor, you could have hidden a basketball under the hump in the middle. She took it back and sent me one made by a more experienced quilter.

My fold very nicely. Not a problem.

One "help" for wall hangings is to put another sleeve at the bottom of the quilt/hanging. Put a stick in there, about the thickness of a thin yardstick. That keeps it much flatter, even when it's not.

You prevent volcanoes by squaring up each segment of the star before sewing together.

I like all my quilts to fold as you do. If they don’t, I look for the problem and try to fix it.
