I would like to use a fleece backing on a quilt using my long arm machine. Has anyone used fleece with a long arm before? Any advice on doing so?
Thanks ! |
I don't know how this would work. Fleece is very very very linty and will clog the bobbin and case and the enternal gears. I'm not sure I would try it. LAMs are very expensive to fix.

I tried it - on my particular setup (Bailey), I had a lot of broken thread - finally gave up

You might want to do a test sandwich.

I used fleece backing on a Gammill long arm. There were a few broken threads, but I thought it came out just fine.

I did two full sized ones on my Voyager 17 and had no problems at all. Just don't over-stretch the fleece or you'll have a wonky quilt. I also vacuum out the bobbin area before I put in a new bobbin every time but I do that anyway.

It's possible to do. If you are cleaning and oiling your LA every time you change bobbins you should be fine.

If you're talking about the polyester fleece I say go for it! We did a quilt for my FIL with a fleece back and it quilted beautifully, and there was almost no lint. Check my posts for Pop-Pop's quilt to see the finished quilt.

Definatly run a test first. Fleece also stretches a ton and that may be an issue with the tension of the fabric.
|
I do it with the stretch going horizontal and use lightweight clamps. Minkee, too.

We have done fleece backing on our Gammill with no problem

Love the fleece and Minkee on the backs of quilts. Just make sure that you don't stretch the backing. Works great with my APQS machine.

i've used fleece on the backs of many quilts - quilted on the long arm-
they stitch up beautifully! the one thing to keep in mind is the stretch of the fleece- one way stretches more than the other- figure out which way is which- and do not stretch it as you roll it up-simply smooth it. i've done them with batting- without batting- with pieced fleece/minkie just becareful of the stretch- use a larger needle- longer stitch length- and have fun with it- the kids in my family request fleece backed quilts all the time- they are called the 'get-naked' blankets! they love to wrap in them after their showers :) |
