Has anyone used fleece for the back of their quilts? I would like to make a small "Steelers" football quilt for my son and would like to use fleece for the back. What do you all think?

I have!! My son loved his quilt that I made with fleece on the back!!

My absolutely favorite snuggle quilt has fleece for the backing. I often finish children's quilts with fleece. Works great and is so warm.
|
I have heard a lot of people here have done that. It seems to work well and is soft and cozy.

I did two lap sized that I had quilted by a LAQ.
She had to quilt around circles that I'd appliqued. Said it was a nightmare - very stretchy. I did one myself, quilting by hand and had no trouble. |

Would be great for guy's football quilt. |
I recently did a baby quilt with a fleece batting and flannel backing. It was a Moda Panel and it felt amazing when I finished it up. I did quilt it on my home sewing machine and it wasn't too bad.

I've used fleece as a backing alos and loved it. Two suggestions:
1. Pre-wash your fabrics as they will shrink when washed but the fleece won't; 2. Don't add batting in the sandwich -- the fleece and top are enough. Good luck! |
Fleece is great on the back of a quilt. Minkee is even better! Soooo soft and stays that way, unlike fleece!!

Makes a great backing, and no batting is needed either :D:D:D

I use fleece a lot for the kids quilts. They say thet are so nice and snuggly.

I know a lot of people that have used fleece. Great for "utility" quilts. The ones you know are going to get worn out.
Great for babies, and young children. Also great for lap quilts too :) |
I've made rag quilts with fleece on the back. They turned out so cute and cuddly, if I do say so myself!

I wanted to make a small, warm quilt to keep in my car, since I spend time there before class in the chilly mornings, and this thread has given me some good ideas.

i love using fleece and minky on the backs of quilts! and i have machine quilted a couple dozen of them without any problems (with a long-arm) nothing stretched out of shape and the people who get them love them! just make sure you prewash the cottons used in the top...the fleece does not shrink. i did use batting in mine, i like them fluffy and soft, but lots of people do not bother with the batting, i guess it depends on where you live.

Did you use flannel as a middle layer for the rag quilt? Did you cut the fleece to make the squares or did you affix it to the back in one large piece?
|
I am thinking of using Minkee on a football quilt - the backing. I know my husband and my sons love flannel instead of cotton for the backings so I am thinking my son would love Minkee. I am wondering if it would be easier to use batting in the middle when FMQ'ing it.

thank you for posting this! I'm going to start making a quilt for my bed with a fleece backing and was wondering if it was a good idea or not. Of course, I was going to do it anyway, as my room will be freezing this winter.
So it doesn't stretch? I was going to tie it so that it wouldn't seem so stretched, but I'm also putting a small strip as one of the borders on the front and have heard it can mess up your sewing machine. This isn't true is it? |
