I am thinking of using fleece as a backing on a quilt. Has anyone ever done this? Is it ok to do so?
|
I've used it many times. It takes a bit more attention, but I love it!

I love the feeling of minkee, fleece and flannel on the back of quilts! In that order.

The very first quilt I made (log cabin pattern) I guess I can't really call a quilt because it was only the top and the fleece backing. I felt that with that nice thick soft fleece it didn't need batting too!
Let me tell you that was one of the warmest, most comfortable things I've ever wrapped around myself. |
Fleece is wonderful as a backing because then you don't also need batting, unless you really want it thick and warm. It works very well for doing SID or outlining the figures in a panel. I've used it with both hand and machine quilting and it worked great. I haven't tried it on a tied quilt, but I would think it would work just fine that way too.

I have used fleece. It came out fine. I used a flannel sheet as the batting. My husband loves it. I prefer no fuzzy backing. I guess it goes back to my childhood when we slept under homemade quilts with muslin backing. I think it is a matter of taste.

Yeah, it's a nice way to kill two birds with one stone. I've done it often and plenty.

Fleece is wonderful for a backing. As mentioned above, you don't need batting unless you want a super warm quilt.

When you are using fleese, what kind do you use? I've noticed a difference in weight, and in price.

its ok to do what ever you want- there are no (real quilt police-only a few people who think they are)
the only thing to take into consideration when deciding on mixing fibers is laundry-care...if you can wash it all together- you can put it all together- when i use fleece for backings i make sure i pre-washed the cotton fabrics- i also include care instructions on my label- when using fleece you need to make sure the quilt is washed in cold water- it's the same as using minkee- which is a polyester fleece. i've combined many many different fibers in the same quilts with great success- i love using wools- and silks are just fabulous! my granddaughter's always want minkee or arctic fleece. |
