fleece as backing?

Do you ladies think that fleece is a good backing, this is for a 10 year old's quilt. I want to make sure it's not too fuzzy and would mess yo my machine, or be difficult to quilt by machine. Thanks

mom-6 11-25-2014 04:15 PM

I frequently use fleece, especially on lap quilts. In fact I cheat and don't use batting which makes it nice and light weight but still snuggly.

coopah 11-25-2014 04:21 PM

Sure! Works great and is so cuddly! I don't use batting when I use fleece.

Susy 11-25-2014 05:08 PM

I am using it more and more, cheaper, more snuggly and easy to quilt!

kellyer21 11-25-2014 06:44 PM

Thanks! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I won't use batting either. What method of batting works well with fleece? I usually pin, didn't have success with elmer's glue when I tried it.

cathyvv 11-25-2014 07:11 PM

Yes, use fleece. It's no fuzzier than flannel. You probably also want to use a walking foot. A 10 year old will love the fleece backing.

quiltingbuddy 11-25-2014 08:39 PM

I have not done a fleece-backed quilt but would like to because it sounds so cozy. How far apart do you quilt it when doing it this way?

quiltlady1941 11-25-2014 09:48 PM

I love using fleece for a backing.. quilt great too.. it hides your mistakes in quilting as the stitches fall into the fleece..great stuff..

If I use fleece, I don't use batting. I make blankets that are flannel on one side, and fleece on the other. The fleece is the backing and a bigger piece so I can bring it over as the binding. I just pin the two fabrics together because they act like a magnet, they really stick together. No shedding, no lint problem.

SulaBug 11-26-2014 12:36 AM

I am with the rest of the ladies, as I always love to use fleece for a backing!!
:D :D :D :D

Okay, after reading all these comments, I'm ready to give fleece a try. :)

kellyer21, thanks for asking the question regarding this!

Abby'smom 11-26-2014 06:39 AM

 I agree with all the comments so far -- this has been first time I used fleece as a backing and am so pleased -- the quilts are so soft and cozy -- my only concern is that fleece loses that softness with washing, but these are gifts, so....

I just hand tied a throw for a friend . She had used upholstery fabric for the top warm and wanted natural for bating and fleece for the backing. it is very heavy it was a bear to work with.

melodyr 11-26-2014 12:20 PM

What a great idea! Now I have something else to try. Silly me never thought of this.

nanac 11-26-2014 12:27 PM

Well, this answered one of my questions about using fleece for backing. My grandson wants a quilt with fleece backing, but he also wants the batting. I have an idea that using the batting with the fleece might make it too difficult to quilt, but he wants it to be heavy.

Scakes 11-26-2014 05:04 PM

Love the fleece for backing. It is so warm and snuggly. great for us "big kids" too. :-)

cathyvv 11-26-2014 05:08 PM

Go to Walmart and buy their light weight fleece for batting. It'll be easier to handle and will add that extra layer for warmth.

SouthPStitches 11-26-2014 05:30 PM

Joann's is having a big sale on their fleece - by the yard or the entire bolt. Just bought some cream colored today. I have used it on laps, kids tagalong quilts and on wall hangings. Machine quilts well with a walking foot. Also not difficult to hand quilt with either. It's a real time and money saver for certain projects.

momto5 11-26-2014 05:52 PM

I just made one for my DD's MIL who stays cold all the time. I put Warm and Natural batting in it and fleece on the back. I think it's keeping her warm enough, finally!

meyert 11-26-2014 07:31 PM

I love using fleece for the backing of a quilt. I am working on one right now

Bubbie 11-27-2014 12:17 AM

Fleece is great, but NO batting. If you put batting in, the quilt will be too warm. The child getting your quilt with the fleece backing will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

cindi 11-27-2014 03:39 AM

Guess I'm in the minority. Fleece makes me sweat - it just doesn't feel "breathable" to me, so I won't use it for anyone else's quilt if it might make them sweat, too....

farmquilter 11-27-2014 06:10 AM

How about quilting on a frame, which way do you put it on the frame. Don't work with fleece so have no clue about frame quilting something. Looks like lots of you have been using it as backings.

earthwalker 11-27-2014 06:40 AM

I have used fleece as batting, but I have always balked at using it on the back as I find it collects lint/bits/pet hair etc. I vacuum every day, but my home seems a magnet for 'debris'.

AZ Jane 11-27-2014 06:42 AM

Flannel front and back - wool batting - warm........................

wendiq 11-27-2014 07:49 AM

I've tried to use fleece, but it stretches and I have ended up with puckers. How do I eliminate this.....using domestic machine.....Thanks for any tips.......: )

tessagin 11-27-2014 07:57 AM

So thankful for this post. I have 6 quilts for the northern Midwest I'm working on and wondered if the fleece would be warm enough.. Was considering a light weight loft for the batting but may the fleece will be enough?

sdeaaz 11-27-2014 09:11 AM

I do this all the time..... kids don't like a heavy quilt..... these are just right.

Yes, absolutely! I use fleece and no batting on all my charity quilts. The hospital loves them. I even quilt on them with no problem. Enjoy!

debbieoh 11-27-2014 05:23 PM

Not only do I use fleece but NO batting. the quilts are lighter but warm and comfy

KnitnutBZ 11-27-2014 05:43 PM

another idea I i use Minky for backings. I still use batting. The only problem I've had is the spray adhesive doesn't stick to it. So you have to pin.but it makes a really soft fluffy. Quilt.

dorismae904 11-28-2014 09:55 AM

I just used flannel and minky to make a blankie for my GGD. Came out nice but make sure to pin all way round. It turned nicely and I stitched two rounds around. This is now GGD's favorite blankie for her bed. I think it's the Minky that they like. My sister just finished a flannel blanket for her GS and used fleece for the batting. Came out really nice.

marcias 11-28-2014 09:15 PM

OK. I am so glad for this subject and ya'lls replies. I only tried fleece on the back once (quilting on a frame) and the stitching on the back was horrible. Is there some trick to how to do it on a longarm/midarm quilting frame? Thanks.

I love using fleece on the back of my quilts. Just got home from Joanns spent 78.00 saved 160.00 Love their fleece especially at 70% off

quiltingbuddy 11-29-2014 07:54 AM

I think I will have to try this with fleece on the back. It sounds so warm and cozy! Does anyone know how close together the quilting needs to be?

DonnaPBradshaw 12-01-2014 07:40 PM

When you use fleece do you need to stretch it tight or just slightly when you pin it for quilting a quilt?

masufa 12-01-2014 09:14 PM

Will Project Linus accept a quilt/blanket that only has a top and a fleece backing with no batting in the middle?
