Fleece Backing
 

I have used fleece for backing on a couple baby quilts and had enough to cover. However, a quilt I just completed needs a bigger piece of fleece than the one I have. Has anyone joined two pieces of fleece for a backing? Thank you in advance.

No I have not tried that, I wonder if the seam might look/feel funny?

I'm wondering how you sandwiched the smaller one for quilting and how you actually did quilt it? Fleece would be such a soft backing!

I use fleece for most of my quilts, but have never joined it. I would join it with a wider seam, maybe 1" and then lay the seam open and top stitch it down each side so it will stay flat. Should be OK!

How much bigger? If a couple of inches, could you add regular cotton around the edges and use the fleece in the middle? Or maybe you could piece two sections together with a wide embroidery stitch or couple rows (not zigzag, but flowers, etc) so that it would not move or tear apart. That way, it would only be two layers instead of three.

I have pieced fleece and minkie for backings -- since I have backed queen sized quilts with both-- Just sewed a seam ( 1/2" wide) and pressed it open-- no problems, no adverse bulk, worked just fine, couldn't even really tell in the quilted finished quilt

JoAnn's has 85" wide fleece. That should cover even a small double size quilt!

A while back, I was able to find wide fleece- ~90" wide - at Joann Fabrics. Just plain colors but perfect as I was looking for a blanket size.

I recently did just that. Worked out fine.

I have joined it, no problems, opened seams, quilted no problems and barely noticeable

Joining a seam might just end up being bulky.

Get the wide fleece. That would be better than a seam.

As I am frugal and on a budget, I've done it :o I've joined the fleece as if it would be batting, by hand, and then used bias tape (because I had some at hand - would sure work with a "normal" strip of fabric) to cover it. I only recently learned to join batting with the machine, so I haven't done it yet, but I'm sure that would also work with fleece. Here's what mine looked like:
