Has anyone backed a quilt with fleece. I would like to use it on my SIL football quilt. Is it to stretchy to quilt. Any input would be great. Let me know if this is feasible. Thanks.

I have, on a long arm machine and it turned out fine. I had a harder time with the binding(I left enough of the back to roll over to the front)...it had buckles in it that I couldn't get out all the way.

I use it a lot because it is so warm and snuggly (I do a lot of lap blankets), it tends to bunch up during machine quilting but I did find if I didn't lower the presure foot and moved the quilt myself , it didnt bunch up. And of course hand quilting it was a snap.

Quite a few people use fleece for backing. There have been numerous posts about it here. You might try the 'search' button at the top of this page.

Have done several and I like how it turns out. I stitch in the ditch and try not to pull, because of the stretch, free motion is out of the question for me, anyways. I found to bind it after I was done quilting, I sewed around the entire edge, that made it easier to bind. One thing I like is it is only two layers as compared to using traditional cotton as the backing. Just remember it can stretch, but if you are careful it is not a problem.

Would it be to hard to use fleece backing and warm and natural together? My poor DD freezes on the 4th of July. I am thinking about backing a lap quilt with fleece for her. Can you also use the spray basting with fleece?

I've used the poly batting and the fleece together and have had no problem, and I just used the fleece and W&N and had no problem, I add the extra depending on who and where its going (cold)

I have used fleece on baby quilts. I spray basted and it held well enough to avoid the stretchiness I expected. And when I did the edges before I put the binding on, I used a big zigzag to hold the fleece in palce before attaching the binding. Worked OK. Wouldn't want to do it on anything really big!

A customer of mine recently used minky (on a king size), it came out beautifully. I expecially liked the way the quilting cut into the pile of the fabric - made the design really sink in/pop.

I havent before, but I bet it would work great, and OOOOOHHHH, would it be SOFT AND WARM!!!!!!!!!!

I have never tried the spray basting but I will now lol

I spray baste with the fleece and have never had a problem quilting them on my machine. I just did a lap size with 2 layers of fleece and love how it turned out.

Thanks for the answers. My soon to be SIL likes fleece blankets but doesn't like quilts with cotton backing. I'm going to try fleece on the back of quilt and see if that works better. I just keep thinking "silly boy"

I make blankets that are fleece on one side and flannel on the other. I break it into sections (top, middle, bottom), and sew an X to anchor both together. That way it doesn't bunch or move around. I have pretty good success with that method.

I'm making a quilt for my 1-1/2 yo GD, with a cotton top, and fleece back (no batting), and am planning to stitch in the ditch, but wasn't sure what to do about binding. Can I do a normal separate, cotton binding, sewing it to the front and hand-sewing it to the back? |
I have done two quilts with cotton tops, no batting and fleece backing.
After SITD, I do the binding the same as on any other quilt. I use a separate cotton strip. I sew the binding to the back of the quilt and wrap it around to the front and top stitch it down. It turns out great. |
I use fleece on a lot of quilts & never had a problem with it stretching. I have sold several denim photo quilts with fleece backing & everyone loves them. They are very warm. I do use the spray basting & a few pins, but not many. Once it is quilted, I just square it off leaving enough of the fleece around the edges to fold over & zigzag down.
