Fleece panel for batting?
 

I found a terrific sale on a fleece panel (measures 58"x48") 10 yards makes 7 blankets for $8.00. Not sure if I like the panel itself, but I need to make three baby quilts and thought of using these as batting. Would it alright to use?

I think it would be fine to use as batting as long as the panel colors don't show through. If the panel is very dark and your fabrics are very light, shadowing through could be a problem; otherwise it won't matter.

Flannel has a habit of shrinking a *lot*. It would be a good idea to wash and dry the flannel twice before using as batting, just to make sure it doesn't shrink so much it distorts the finished quilt when washed.

fleece is not flannel- it's polyester & does not generally shrink- it needs to be washed in cold water though-
i've used fleece for batting before- it works fine- but is a bit (different) to quilt- a good sharp-new needle is a must.
and as was mentioned- show through could be a factor-
works great for tied quilts
makes very very warm quilts

And if the colors fit, you can use it as the backing at the same time.

I don't think you will be happy with the results if you use that for batting. The colors look kind of dark, and I think they will show through. If you don't like the panels maybe you can use them for backing. I think the airplane one is kind of cute, but the animals in the second one look kind of scary. They are a bargin, and I would just get the Tugger-Jeep one for boys.

ckcowl is correct. What I wrote is true for flannel, not for fleece, and the links you have posted are for fleece.

I've used fleece for batting a few times and have been perfectly happy with the results. If you are doing medium to dark colored quilts, I think it's a great bargain. One reason I like using fleece is at 60" wide, you can do a twin size and only have to quilt where you want to, not every 4" or whatever.

I wouldn't for two reasons.

The first is the aforementioned fact that unless your quilt top and back are very dark all over - the print on the fleece will show through.

More important though is because they are polyester fleece and these are baby quilts. I won't use polyester in baby quilts (actually I won't use polyester at all but that's because I don't like it) because of the burn results. Polyester "melts" and can catch fire much easier than natural fibers.
