I know it was how I was brought up, but at times I will call a refrigerator an ice box. Drives my kids wild as I never had to use one.
I expect flimsey is of another generation or country[?] . |
I think the term "flimsy" came from either Across The Pond or Down Under. "Wadding" is another unfamiliar term, used in place of "batting". And I've also heard "wagga" or "wagga quilt". I'm still not sure what that one means. :)
With the proliferation of quilting blogs that are from around the world, we are definitely being exposed to new terms and ideas! |
A wagga is an Australian utility quilt/rug:

Flimsy is a word given to an unquilted quilt top when quilters discovered the internet. Lots of quilt terms were first used on message boards. Anyone remember Delphi? and email boards?

Quilt top isa all I refer it to, also, seems to many new terms will get a bit confusing ..

Lol this made me chuckle, thinking of my grandparents, who are in their mid-80's. In their world, the ambulance is an "aid car".
|
My husband and I were talking about this the other day: we still "dial" a phone, though there is no dial; "roll down" a car window, though there is no crank (or even further back, no isenglass); "type" a paper with no typewriter... :)

I think another new term is "puddling" - when you are FMQ and describes how the quilt is gathered around the sewing machine.

Boy do I have flimsys!! My daughter is quilting them for me and I am so happy about that, otherwise when I am gone the rest of the family would either have to send them out to be quilted or donate them to some group for charity. I am SO HAPPY to see some of them finished!
