Fly away quilt top

I got this pattern & quilt kit at a cute little shop in northern Idaho on my vacation it says you can put 2 boarders on it but the kit did not come with boarder material, I am not to sure if it needs boarders what do you think it measures at 59x75 now. It went together very quickly

Mariposa 10-20-2014 08:52 PM

Great job on this! Love the pattern. Borders only if you'd like. :)

I think I'd put a small white border around it. The white column needs balancing, IMO

Gannyrosie 10-21-2014 12:33 AM

I would put a double border, small one of the white, then the larger of one of the colors of the geese.

QuiltnNan 10-21-2014 02:45 AM

i would say that it does not necessarily need borders. the binding will 'hold the pattern in' if you know what i mean. it looks great just like that.

Homespun 10-21-2014 02:56 AM

I would put borders or one...only on the long sides to make it a little wider.

GingerK 10-21-2014 03:43 AM

I suppose it comes down to what you will be using it for. If it is going to be a throw/lap quilt, I would say it is fine. It is a bit narrow to use on a single bed, so I would add borders for that, perhaps only on the sides or wider on the sides than on the top and bottom.

I am laying under a quilt made from that pattern right now! I have no border on mine and its my favorite minkee-backed quilt ever! Nice job!

mannem 10-21-2014 04:53 AM

It would depend how much the boarders pay, if little, I would chase them off, really fast.

OHHH Minkie that sounds like a good idea I have not used Minkie as a back, does I quilt up nice? Do you mid showing a photo of the one you made?

Jeanne S 10-21-2014 05:23 AM

Nice modern design. In my opinion it does not need borders, looks great as is if the current size suits your purpose for it.

I agree. If you want it as a lap or wall quilt then you are going to OK without one. Watch out, Minkie is quite stretchy and is NOT that easy to quilt as flannel.

Thank you all for you input! I think I will do some boarders to make it fit a twin, I really had no plan when making the quilt I just wanted to try something new and these flying geese were new to me and I never had bought a kit before.

zozee 10-21-2014 06:16 PM

I'm liking the apple green, teal, and tangerine. Maybe fool with those colors?

zennia 10-22-2014 01:46 AM

Don't know about boaders but do know I like your quilt.

youngduncan 10-22-2014 03:14 AM

I really like your quilt: the colors, the design, the visual impact -- all are stunning. In my opinion, a work of art deserves a frame. Even a small white frame will give a viewer's eye a place to stop and make it focus on the center. I've learned, however, that a personal choice is always the best one. If you like a border, put one (or two) or two on. If you don't care for borders, leave them off. Either way, it's a beautiful quilt.

really...you just had to go there..

Jingle 10-22-2014 03:27 AM

I like mannem's reply, very cute.
I like at least one border on most of my quilts. Usually more, really depends on the size I want it to be.
Your quilt, your decision.

Barb in Louisiana 10-22-2014 04:18 AM

I am a big fan of these modern, no border type quilts. Having said that, I almost always add borders because I never seem to think the quilt is big enough, thereby making it more traditional.

As an answer to your question - this is such a personal choice. Modern = no borders. Traditional = borders. And, is it big enough? You have an oversize lap right now. Do you need or want a lap, or do you need a twin? Borders will up the size.

Let us know what you decide to do.

paoberle 10-22-2014 04:29 AM

I like at least one border. I think of borders like the matting and frame of a picture. Their purpose is to make the "picture" stand out.

AnnT 10-22-2014 04:34 AM

My first thought was "Love it, as is" but after reading GrannieAnnie's post, I agree - a narrow white border would look good.

This is just darling. You picked a winner for sure! Would you share the name of the pattern, and even where in North Idaho?
Thanks, Susan

WTxRed 10-22-2014 07:31 AM

I saw this same pattern made up just yesterday! The stripes were various blacks/whites and the flying geese I think were maybe these same colors. It had no borders either. Cute top!

BizyStitches 10-22-2014 07:37 AM

Is that the name of the pattern "Fly Away", I tried some searches but I can't seem to find this cute pattern?

tinliz 10-22-2014 07:44 AM

Leave the boarders off and call it modern.
