flying geese
 

I want to make a pattern with flying geese in it, and I want to use the easy angle ruler, and companion ruler. My problem is that the patterns calls for 3 3/8 inch, and 7 1/4 inch strips to cut geese from, but the rulers don't have 1/4 or 3/8 markings on them. Can someone help me. The pattern is a free one from Mccalls - A Simple Blue Quilt. Any help would be appriciated. Also I have Fons & porter flying geese ruler, and it dosen't have those marking either. sorry pattern is from Epatternscentral.

I don't have those rulers, but my guess is that you put the tip of the ruler so it just meets the top of your fabric.

do the patterns state the size the geese should be when made? I hate patterns that don't say this. it helps a great deal if you want to use any other method of constructing them then the one in the pattern directions.

This is my go to method for flying geese. You need no special rulers. If they have a size that I cannot cut on my ruler, I go up a bit on the squares. like 3 3/8 to 3 1/2, so just 1/8 diff. Making sure that the other square is appropriately sized up) When you are finished, you will have a bit bigger goose you can trim to the size you need for your pattern. Hope this helps!

ps if you dont know what size you need? try making ONE and measure that. Pain I know..I have been there, but in the long run you will be happier.

Bonnie Hunter recently had a mystery quilt and one of the steps has a video on using these 2 rulers to create flying geese from strips. You need to know the unfinished size the unit will be - you may need to make one first using the method in the pattern if they do not tell you. In her example, it is 2 high by 3.5 wide, so she starts with 2 inch strips for both the goose and the wings. This was my first time using these rulers, and I love this method - it is so much better than cutting the squares, etc. Check out the video and the pictures right below.

The other thing you could do with the geese rulers you have...check the 1 and 1/2 in. measurements against one of your other rulers to see if they are the same. Use painters/masking tape to mark the needed increments on the geese rulers you want to use. Using tape, the markings are easily removed when you no longer need them. Plus you can write on the tape to help remember which spot is which increment - cuz I know I'd forget!
