Hi,
Today I have been attempting to make a star block which uses several flying geese units to make the 8 pointed star. Flying geese are proving to be a challenge to say the least. Is there an easy way to make consistent units of these blocks? Thanks Maybe1day |

When I do my flying geese, I draw a line from one cornor to the other on the small square. This really helps in sewing a straight line. I have a nice machine with all the ruler lines on it and drawing the line is still the best way for me to go. Also, I have a small piece of cardboard and wrapped it in 220 gauge sandpaper. I put my pieces to be drawn on this and it grips the fabric just enough and you have a nice straight line.
Here's a link that will give you different options in making them: http://www.quilterscache.com/H/Howtomakegeese.html Good Luck!! |
I have used the above methods and they all work
Flying geese just take practice and patence! but when you are done with this quilt you will be a pro! |
You may want to try paper piecing. I works fairly well for me. Pam

When I make flying geese, I use Eleanor Burns template and it is fool proof. She has two sizes. Check it out.

Instead of pinning the squares to make the corners, just tough them with a little tad of fabric glue. Put the glue in the corner that will be cut off.
You can also make flying geese with 2 half square triangles sewn together. |
Eleanor Burns has a good method also. I have her directions if you would like.

Look online and look for "No Waste Flying Geese" way easy!

Check Eleanor Burns. She has an easy way to make them 2 at a time.

I use Ricky Timms method for flying geese. I love how they come out with the little "pocket"

My sisters/neices and I made a family quilt - it was supposed to be a flying geese pattern. AS it was our first try and we were all newbies, we ended up naming it "Crippled Ducks". We still all waned it when it was done though!!

Thank you for these links, very interesting watching, who knew there were so many ways to make flying geese units?
