FMQ on 401A?

Does anyone here FMQ on their 401A? I can't figure out how to lower the feed dogs. The lever on the right bed raises the needle plate to remove it, but the dogs don't drop.

Raising the plate is sufficient, since it makes the feed dogs flush with the surface.

This model machine is known to not be the best machine for FMQing. The drop in bobbin, coupled with having raise the plate makes for not great stitching and tension issues. I've tried it and agree, it's my LEAST favorite machine for FMQing out of all my vintage machines. So....just a heads up.

I use my 401A and 500 for FMQing. On the 401 just raise the plate. I did buy a free motion foot for it from Sew Classic. It is spring loaded so it doesnt hop and that took getting used to but it works great. I have never had any tension issues with quilting. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies re FMQ on 401A.. When I raise the plate it is so wobbly I don't see how one can sew on it.

I think there is a full on up position (to remove it) and a second "click" position that holds it securely in the up position. Check it, you can sort of "feel" the difference. Linda
