Has anyone fmq on a horizon 7700? I just got one last month and have tried to fmq on it with fustrating results. My thread will break, the tension is not always right, it seems to skip a stitch some. I really don't know what is going on. I did fmq on my previous janome dc3018. I'm not great but I feel so fustrasted. I do have an appointment on Tuesday. Any suggestions appreciated.

try a larger needle and a prefer to work with a top stitch needle.

I have no problems with my Horizon. I did not adjust the tension at all and had perfect stitches, no thread breakage or any other problems. I used the open toe free motion quilting foot and stitch D1S. Hope you get yours sorted as I think the Horizon quilts beautifully.

Do any of you use special threads?? I appreciate all your responses. :)

Thanks Woody.

I have recently been practicing on my Horizon. Everything is fine until I move the fabric toward me. The manual says not to pull the fabric toward the front. The stitch is very nice, I use the one recommended in the manual.

How can you fmq and not move the fabric toward you? All my setting are as in the manual.

I've FMQ on mine ok too. Some people use the single hole (I didn't), but that might make a difference.
The other thing I found, you need to make sure that the FMQ foot is adjusted so that it barely skims the surface of the quilt...if it's too high it will cause skipped stitches and thread breakages. There is a little screw at the top on the right that will raise and lower the foot. Try adjusting the foot so it's just high enough and see if that helps |
Go to leahdaydesigns.com and watch her tutorials, they are free and extremely informational and very useful! Let me know what ya' think?

are you signed on to the Janome Horizon Yahoo Group Lots of good info there.

skipped stitches/ uneven stitches usually means it's time to change the needle- prehaps you need a different size / type of needle for the thread/sandwich combo you are using
there is always a new learning curve- when learning a new machine- breath- relax- trouble shoot the stitch quality/tension issues- and practice- it will get better. :) |
I did have to change the tension a little on mine, but I think that's all about how I FMQ.
You'll get it right, it just takes practice, I like how mine works. I also use the Supreme Slider as well so the movement is smooth. |
I went back and re-read the manual, down at the bottom of the page there is a caution against pulling the fabric toward you while using the open toe foot to FMQ. I was using regular sewing thread and it would shred and break when I pulled the fabric toward me. I have not tried using the closed toe, but will try it in my next practice session. I agree with you that it is near impossible to to FMQ without moving the fabric toward you. I got good results when moving side to side.

You might also want to do a search. I believe this has been discussed before and hopefully some suggestions/solutions out there. Good luck.
I have the 7700 but haven't yet tried FMQ on it. |
