FMQ with monofilament thread?

I was trying to quilt with monofilament thread and after awhile the
thread started to break. I was using a 14 needle and when I checked
out different sites for information, it says to use a 9 or 10 needle.
Will this size go through three layers of quilting. BTW, I was using
Superior thread.
TIA,
Elaine

Yes, a 10 will definitely go through a standard quilt with one layer of batting. I do it all the time. Make sure you are using a quilting needle & not a universal or jeans needle for your quilting.

If the thread kept breaking, you might also check to make sure everything is threaded properly (and the bobbin should be cotton thread). If that doesn't do it, you might try thread conditioner. Good luck!

I use a topstitch needle when I free motion quilt. That is the kind of needle Superior thread recommends to FMQ.

I never FMQ with invisible thread because it is a little thicker and you can't match the movements perfectly like the machine can do.

I must be doing every thing wrong then. I use the Mono Poly monofilament thread, which is really a fine thread, thinner than my other threads, and very soft.

I leave my tension on normal, and use a universal needle (probably 80/12 or 14).

I use either cotton or polyester in the bobbin.

I do use a thread stand and a thread wrap, which I think is really needed with the fine soft thread. I tape a safety pin on the machine to use as an additional thread guide.

I fmq all the time using the above. I am sewing on an old Kenmore which is literally falling apart in places, but it doesn't give me fits when I fmq.
My personal opinion is that every machine, every sewist/seamstress is different. What works for me may or may not work for someone else.
Good luck and after experimenting, you will come up with what works for you.

Superior's website says to use a 60/8 & set tension at 2
