I am doing some fmq and can't get going. Tension is not right on the bottom. I think I can adjust that OK by trial and error, but the question I have is this:

Do you normally use a quilting needle or a universal needle? Seems like there are so many variables I am going to be here all night trying stuff. I have Q. needles from size 75 to 90 and I have universals size 80. Would appreciate help. Am using Coats & Clark all purpose thread.

Generally the size of the needle to use depends on a lot of variables. The thinner the thread, of course, the smaller the needle, but if the thread breaks the solution in most cases is to switch to a larger eye needle. The larger needle may leave slightly larger holes on the fabric, but those heal on their own. I suggest you start with a regular universal and change if you need to. It is more important that the needle is sharp and straight. Change at the start of each project or after a long time in use if working on a large project.

Thank you who answered. I got it all going. Used a Q. needle size 80 and finally got the tension right (I hope). Bet I will make some notes for myself this time. I have to go thru this every time because I think I can remember and of course I can't.

I'm not a fan of universal needles for FMQ. I usually use a Quilting 80, sometimes a 90, and on rare occasions, with some of the novelty threads, a metallics needle -- helps if you are having thread shredding in the needle.

Agree with Purplefiend - Universal needles are not for quilting. I use Topstitch 90/14, or 80/12, depending on the thread weight. Conversely I like a Quilting 75/11 for piecing.
