FMQ problems on t shirt quilt- help!
I have 4 t shirt quilts I'm working on for memory quilts for gifts. I'm halfway through the first one and when I'm doing the fmq right over the slick shiny decal/ emblem/ logo my thread is breaking and/ or just getting unhappy. My batting needs to be quilted every 4 inches. Many of the logos are really big. Each block is 16 inches. I'm doing a stippling meander.
Any thoughts or pointers are appreciated. Susan |
Logos are a challenge. I have to decide when I quilt over them , where I will quilt or IF I will quilt over it. I avoid the plastic-y logos like the PLAGUE. If I HAVE to go over them, I make sure I have a big enough needle, I go slow, I quilt as little as possible...and I PRAY! you didnt' say what kind of thread you are using? That might be part of the issue too. ( you also have to ignore the hole the needle makes...that plastic ink is not fun.) The last tshirt quilt I did...I did the biggest meader I could and get it quilted. You want the tshirts to be the stars anyway.

Thanks for your input Beth! Some of the logos take up the WHOLE 16 inch block. Ugh. I may tip off the other three quilts after I stichery in the ditch.
I'm using size 90 (I think) top stitch needle. Connecting threads cotton thread in the top and bobbin. I have a janome 6600 machine. |

I find the logos are kind of rubbery and tend to grab and hold onto the needle. I avoid sewing over them but you might have some luck covering the whole logo with tissue paper and stitching through it? The tissue paper could be carefully pulled off after the quilting if it works. I might also instead of FMQ the meandering, switch to a regular foot and do a design that doesn't require flipping the quilt around too much.

You might try regular straight stitching instead of fmq....I had better luck doing straight grid lines over logos.

Try a thin tear away or solvvy over the top before stitching

I have only made one and I know exactly what you are talking about. That slippery fabric, especially if it has the holes in it, is a nightmare to work with. After reading the posts on this topic I had a brain storm. Why not photo copy that shirt and print it on plain muslin or even the plain solid color back of another T. That way the decal area would not be slick or shiny. I will have to try it before I accept another commission for a T shirt quilt.
