Whilst I still need to master this art of feathering myself here are a few things I have learnt.
I use Machinger gloves - or very lightweight gardening gloves that have little "grips"
on the end of the fingers, helps moving your sandwich around.

I was surprised when I tried the cheap plastic gloves I got at the Fred's (dollar) store. A box of 50 or so really cheap. They work beautifully! You can really control the fabric so much better! You don't have to have expensive or bulky gloves to do this!

sometimes grabbing the quilt with each hand works better than putting them flat and trying to move the quilt that way. practice each and see what works best for you. some people love those plastic curved helpers or flat grabbers, etc.
i tend to use gloves with little rubber dots on the under side of the fingers.
