what is the difference between stippling and meandering quilting?

Stippling, traditionally, is very tight small random quilting. In FMQ by machine it usually resembles the "meander" design which is the random wavy line often curving back on itself but not crossing over itself. The Meander is more open and loose. Here is an example of the meander design done as a stipple. It is the quilting done in the bright lime green portion of this example. Usually when a meander becomes a stipple the quilting is no more than 1/4" apart in any direction but is often less than that:

All I see is stippling is closer together.

When you stipple, you don't cross any line of stitching. Meandering, you can cross. Both can be any size you want it to be. As always, we each have our own thoughts of how we interpret the rules.

I thought stippling was a very tight meander? Just getting started in FMQ so I'm no expert.

what Tartan said. i never crossed with meandering, so stippling it just much tighter.

I also agree that stippling is just tight meandering.

I was always taught that with stippling no line ever touches or crosses. Meandering can contain loop d loops, hearts, stars, what ever ( meandering) across the top of the quilt.

When I stipple it is large and has open spaces between, my FMQ and meander is probably the same. I just move my hands as the mood strikes me. I don't know any rules and don't care about them.
