FMQ & Tension question

I'm trying to teach myself FMQ and my bottom threads look nasty.....I'm thinking that apart from all the obvious hints/tips such as relax, machine/needle faster than fabric that I should be changing my tension...if that's the case, should I go up or down in numbers????

Any advice is appreciated - so long as you don't say give up!

I think you need to define "nasty," because different situations call for different actions.

If it's thread nests and tangles, it's something to do with the top thread, and it may be as simple as remembering to put the presser foot down or rethreading the machine. If it looks like a straight line of thread, your top tension needs adjusting...or maybe the bobbin.
