What is it about their program?

I'm sure they have useful information, but I fall asleep trying to watch them.

I've managed to stay awake during most of the other ones I've watched - Alex Anderson, Kaye Wood, Eleanor Burns, Nancy Zieman

sewjoyce 05-25-2009 12:39 PM

LOL -- How early/late are they are on??? Sometimes the one that starts at 7am on Saturday morning puts me back to sleep--doesn't matter whose show it is

nativetexan 05-25-2009 02:24 PM

they are a little slow talking. like Sharlene jergerson's show i used to watch. can't think of the name of her show though. but so slooooowww.
Quilting in the heartland? think that was it.

Blue Bell 05-25-2009 05:18 PM

bearisgray,
That is so funny. Every time I watch their show on Thurs. at 2:30 PM, I fall asleep, as well, even if I am very interested in the program. Is there anyone else falling asleep?

littlehud 05-25-2009 06:11 PM

They come on here in the afternoon. Everytime I sit down to watch I fall asleep. I thought it was because I had been busy all day and was tired, but after reading this maybe it's them. :) :) :)

Skeat 05-26-2009 06:49 AM

If you all wouldn't stay up all night quilting...you might not fall asleep when the gett'ns getting good:)LOL They did have a great show here on Saturday...and, I'll have to try it. They sewed strips of bright colors on black between....about a 4-5" square...sewed it right on a foundation piece...I think a light muslin would work great. Once sewn, they trimmed to the correct size....and, x's 4...put the blocks together and matched up the colors..they looked super! Missed the name of it...and, I wasn't sleeping:)LOL Good show...you slept right thru it maybe!:)Skeat

Rose Marie 05-26-2009 07:31 AM

If I had to quilt the way they do I would fall asleep quilting.
The glove thing drives me crazy. I live in Az and will not put on a hot glove.
I bought thier triangle corner cutter and have never used it, what a waste of time.
I do like the 1/2 inch ruler and use it to make El Burns method for half sq triangles.
Thier gadgets are expensive so buy the same thing only by cheaper makers. With Joanns coupons I have quite a collection of gadgets now.

borntoquilt 05-26-2009 07:34 AM

I lost all my quilting shows when we switched from satelite dish to cable. boo hoo! I sure miss them BUT I have all you guys here to keep me busy.....

butterflywing 05-26-2009 12:47 PM

you guys are right. here i thought it was me. they are so slow and their voices are very soothing, no wonder they relax you back to sleep.

watch with a cold drink in your hand to help stay awake. i have dish and i keep them on 'memory' until i want to see them. sometimes the shows pile up until i have more than a dozen waiting. where i live every day at 3 PM there's another sewing/quilting show. i program to memorize them all. later i open each folder (show title) to see what i want to watch and toss the rest. there are times when i forget for weeks at a time. that's 5 shows each week, times, say, 3 weeks, that's 15 shows right there. ooops! by the way, another show is quilt in a day, at 12:30 AM on thursdays. on rfdtv. that makes 6 per week.

Blue Bell 05-26-2009 04:39 PM

Butterflywing,

You are so lucky to have all those quilts shows to watch. I only have one a week and it is Fons and Porter on Thurs. at 2:30. Unfortunately, I am one of those that falls asleep during the show and that makes me very unhappy for I do like the show. I am often not at home at this time so there are very few shows that I do watch. But this Thurs. I will be home for we need a repair to our well and I am afraid that it will be big bucks. So, I will have less money to spend on fabric.

You all are going to have to do jumping jacks or something while that show is on:)LOL Skeat....who only gets Nancy and Fons on Sat mornings...that is it:)

tnjacke 05-26-2009 05:11 PM

Lately when I have a chance to watch Fons and Porter, I have found the show to be very boring and not to my liking. That being said, I have dozens of VHS tapes of their older shows, that I absolutely loved and learned a lot from them.
But now it seems they are promoting more the use of the new Bernina 830 machine and doing the embroidery stuff with it than actual quilting. At least that is the shows my pbs station has been airing.
Their magazine isn't what it used to be either. Have been a subscriber since issue #1... but not sure I will renew this next year unless something drastic happens.

RedGarnet222 05-26-2009 05:32 PM

LOL! I couldn't help but think they were hypnotizing you! "Buy our magazine and toolssssss ...... LOL

Ducky 05-26-2009 05:34 PM

 Never seen a Fons and Porter program

butterflywing 05-27-2009 11:07 AM

skeat-

used to get nancy, quilt in a day, etc on saturday a.m.

now i get sue hausman , sew with nancy, fons and porter, martha's sewing room and a show called quilting arts with a blond lady whose name i naver remember. they're on every day at 3. same station, alternating days. qiad is on every thursday at (gasp) midnight-ish.different station - rfdtv. EVERYTHING gets memorized on my cd player, which works like FIOS and hold 100 hours. when i remember i skim through, watch what looks good, throw out the rest and let the machine take over til next time. cool.

p.s. also used to get simply quilts with alex anderson. kiss that off.

loves2quilt 05-27-2009 11:19 AM

It seems I am a minority because I like Fons and Porter. I record them and Sewing with Nancy and watch when I get time and have several saved. I like how they work well together and when they differ on a technique they will explain the others view. I used to get America Sews with Sue and she drove me nuts! Im jealous of you that get other shows. Another one I used to get was one with Mlissa or something like that. I miss Simply Quilts, loved that one. Wish there was a channel dedicated just for quilting shows, Id pay extra for it!!

butterflywing 05-27-2009 11:35 AM

even though they are slooooow, i do learn a lot fro them and also get their mag. when i can stay awake, i like their methods ansd that's why i keep their shows until i see them.

so i agree with you. you're not alone.

amocha1 05-27-2009 11:42 AM

You're not a minority, I watch them too. I DVR, Quilting Arts, Quilt in a Day, Fons and Porter and America Quilts Creatively. I replay them while eating dinner or when I first get home from work to wind down. Often times I will turn it on as I get in the bed to wind down.

butterflywing 05-27-2009 11:47 AM

i think that what you can get depends on what part of the country you're in compared to where the show is coming out of. they all run on pbs stations.

before i had dish network i couldn't get anything at all. i'm in central east coast and none of my local pbs stations carried those shows, except channel 21, which was very fuzzy before dish.

Rose Marie 05-27-2009 12:06 PM

I love my DVR and record the few quilting shows still on the air.
If you get the RFD channel they show Quilt in a Day with Eleanor Burns.
I get it on Direct TV.
Mostly I watch all the shows except Simply Quilts on line. She went in with Ricky Tims on a web site that is very expensive.
You will need to have high speed internet. Qnntv costs 24 dollars a year which is not bad considering all the quilt shows they have and full screen also.
http://quilterstv.com is free and they have quite a few shows.

littlehud 05-27-2009 02:21 PM

Wow. I never even thought of using my DVR for this. Silly me.

rm - i have trouble with quilterstv. when i try to watch the videos, they stop in the middle and i can't get them to continue. do you have that problem?

i have the dvr and tape the six shows that i know of. that kinda fills my time every few weeks. i have it set for continuos taping. with 100 hours to fill, you can go a long way, especially if you delete as you go. did you know that there's a way to transfer memory from dvr to hard something? either disc or vhs (which is making a comeback,, according to best buy. glad i never threw those old tapes away).

You are so lucky!! I'd have a celebration in your livingroom everyday!:)

Bevanger 05-28-2009 05:06 AM

Ours comes on about 11:30. I like them but kinda find them boring. Just my opinion. My very fav, is Quilt in a day.

sandpat 05-28-2009 05:12 AM

I'm too busy during the day to stop and watch the shows...I loved Simply Quilts when it came on early in the morning..but now...I don't watch any..miss them though!

Bevanger 05-28-2009 05:16 AM

Here is WA. I watch quilt shows on SAT from 8 AM til 12;30. Via Satellite dish. theres actully a few i like. some i don't get anything from, like georgia bonesteel or the heirloom sewing one. poopie. i can't think of the name. (i'll think of it the sec I hit submit)

Rose Marie 05-28-2009 06:21 AM

I have a recorder attached to my DVR and record a bunch of shows at one time. VHS because the DVD part is too complicated to record with.
With tape it is simple, just one button. DVD takes a bunch of steps and can only watch on my machine.
My internet is expensive so dont have problems with videos. It cost over 30 bucks a month with Quest.

i think the heirloom lady is martha pullen (martha's sewing room). i don't much like her, but she gets good guests. i also think she's the one that sells the pullen pleater.

i'd like to get georgia bonesteel, but no dice. i don't even see that offered here. what station does that come out of? i'll try to find it.

Yeah, thats it. Martha's sewing room. It drives me nuts cuz she'll explain something step by step, then her guest does it again. I don't do hand quilting. I guess thats why Georgia doesn't faze me any, but I do like when she goes to places that for example. Where they make batting or threads, even thimbles. Now those interested me. Here I get it on Channel 28 PBS.

butterflywing 05-28-2009 08:56 AM

i'll try later looking for that pbs station. thanks.

i'll let you know if i find it.
