Well ladies what a big dummy I am. I went for the very first time to my LQS in a small town south of here. I had a blast looking at everything and came out with $38.70 worth. I bought two kits and two patterns. What I didn't realize is that the kits do not have patterns in them. Well I was upset at how dumb I am and decided I would take them back. But then I had the great idea I would go on Amazon and try to find the book since they both were out of the same book. Do you think the cashier who quilts herself should have told me there are no patterns in the kits? I told her it was my first time in one of those quilt shops.

WE even talked about how it was nice to have all the fabrics cut out for you and they are just like the ones in the pattern.
So Amazon did have the book for $13.75 and I ordered it. There are 18 patterns in there so I guess I will get my money's worth.

It is not you most kits always have the pattern with them that is way they are called kits lol. All the kits I have bought do anyway. Sounds like you still ended up ahead.

Well I for one would think that if you're buying a "kit" it would have everything in it including the pattern.. that just seems silly to me to not have the pattern in there. But you are ahead in the long run as now you'll have more patterns...

Well when I have bought kits before they always had a pattern but this as my first time buying a quilting kit. So buyer beware ask questions don't assume. LOL

well you are not foolish I would have expected the pattern to be included, hence the term "KIT".
I believe I would maybe write a little note to the shop owner and explain my shopping trip to their store. How you discussed with the person waiting on you that is was your first such experience and how disappointed you were when you got home and found there was no pattern included. You were under the impression that was why the term KIT was used. ...
and might you suggest that in the future when this type of discussion occurs with a customer that they might mention the pattern is not included. Had they done that you would have made an additional purchase with them. Howere since it was a drive for you, you ordered the book on line. I would try to keep the note pleasant but let them know that for a newbie you need help.

Darlene we would never laugh at you. The cashier should have informed you the patterns were NOT included, Shame on them! Sometimes they have the patterns behind the front desk for people who buy the kits. I would call the store back and let them know what happened. Happy sewing! :D :D :D

I have purchased several kits on line, and all have come with the pattern & instructions. I just finished a rag quilt kit, that didn't come with the right amount of fabric. gggrrrr

Well I did call the shop and talked to the woman that waited on me. I guess none of their kits have patterns. I told her they should put it on the label that pattern is not included but I don't think it made an impression. She was very nice and so was I.
I was looking at the Connecting Threds catalog and all of their kits have a free pattern and instructions but I think they own those patterns I bet that is the difference. The shop I went to cuts their own fabric for these kits.

Not laughing at you.. I have had the same problem only I bougth the kits for a rainy day so didn't discover no patterns until much much later ! My LQS sells lots of these "kits" but they are labeled pattern not included. So like you I learned the hard way read front and back of the packages to see what or if anything else is needed, such as the book. I can understand why they don't include the book becuase it would raise the price so much more. I am surprised that your LQS wasn't more understanding :oops:

I bought a kit at connecting threads my first. I thought the pieces would all be cut...nope chunks iof fabric...I have a problem cutting straight so this dosen't help I guess you have to ask :oops: :oops:

Most kits I've picked up will state on the outside of the package 'need pattern out of book....' or such. Or even a BOM will state up front, 'you will need book 'such-such' for this, etc. So you weren't the one to make the mistake...you assumed a kit was complete...some are! I was amazed you bought the 'kits' for under $40 and thought 'wow'!!:)I hope your book arrives soon! SKeat

I don't think I have ever seen a kit without the pattern without it being noted in big bold letters on the front that the pattern was not included! I am surprised the shop was not more up front about that! Were the kits displayed by the book? Maybe there was a sign that you missed. At least that is what I would be thinking if I got home and found no pattern in the kit. Thankfully you were able to get the book. But look at all of the people you have made aware of a possible problem. We will all make sure we don't have that happen to us! :?

Don't feel too bad--I bought curtains thinking there would be 2 in the package as in a "pair" of curtains. Now, they are sold singly--like what could I do with one curtain?? :lol:

Skeat the kits were $12.50 and $13.50 and I thought that was pretty good.
I also got a pattern on clearance for $2.00 and another for $8.95 with 5 patterns in it. This is a very classy place and I could have stayed for hours but with DH waiting in the car I had to hurry.

W/dh in the car had to make me chuckle:)we had to go about 45min to another town for the next stage of a spelling bee and dh made the mistake of telling me we were going to be too early...so we ended up at a quilt store on the way (one of my favs!)I shopped 'quick'! I would have thought the patterns were in the kit too. And I really think they should have let you know. Still this way you got lots of patterns to work with so you came out ahead.

That doesn't make any sense to me. What good is the cut fabric if you don't have the pattern to make it??

Every kit I've ever bought came with the pattern from my LQS!

You got me curious because I bought 2 quilt kits awhile back so I had to go look and the patterns are in there. Whew! You figured out a way to do yours. Can't wait to see them finished.

Wow what a bummer....I would have thought the patteren would have been included....most are.....guess we need to check that out.....And she should have brought it to your attention that since you were new in the store even.....Just glad it all has worked out for you ....but I sure would let the LQS know if you ever go back......

I would think that if you're buying a kit, the pattern should be included in the kit. But I guess it all works out for the best, since now you have more patterns.

To me, a kit without a pattern is simply a random collection of fabric pieces.
Kind of like a jigsaw puzzle and it's up to you to figure out where everything goes and how it all fits together.

That's a bit different that the pattern wsn't included in your kit. When we make up kits we always include the pattern...if not, then we mark the tag as "will need _______book" or pattern.

I would write a note or call the quilt shop and explain this and if they ask, tell them you purchased the book all ready.

Why would a shop sell something as a KIT without the pattern? If there's no pattern, then it's NOT a kit....I would label it as Pieces Of Fabric!!

But glad you got the book at a good price.

I have only seen kits without a pattern one time but the kits were displayed around the book and if you bought a kit and the book you got a discounted price. There was a sign with the display explaining 1 kit and book something like 5% off, 2 kits and book 10% off. They had a kit for every project in the book.

I bought the just the book because I didn't particularly like some of the fabric in the kits and I wanted to make substitutes. In hindsight it probably would have been cheaper for me to buy a kit or 2 and the book and just substitute the fabrics. I never do anything the easy way :?

Don't feel bad, it's happened to me. Yes, the quilt employee should have explained there was no pattern enclosed and directed you to the book both patterns were in. Sounds like you came out though ahead. Good for you!

that's a good point right there. I have never bought a kit, but will be paying more attention if I do. I think there should ALWAYS be a big note on a pkg. what is and isn't there. I got overcharged by a very nice lady yesterday, and wondering, since the quilt store is so far from me, if I call, is she gonna say, bring your stuff back in? I can't. they have an online site, so gonna call and see if I can work out some kind of credit i can use on there. I was trying to hurry and didn't look at receipt bc hubby was in bathroom. didn't want him to be standing there, when she told me total :oops: i will take it out of budget in next two months, and he wouldn't get mad. It's just my quilters guilt, but I only bought for some really great projects that are definitely gonna get done. they have too, I spent 95.00!!!! :shock: (was overcharged by 17.00,...thought that was a lot at the time.)

Does that LQS have thread on the spools they sell or do they sell the thread seperatly? LOL

Now I'm laughing, bc yesterday I had a dr.'s appt. away from home, and had learned of a new quilting store, right? So I looked it up, online and called them, got directions, and scooted it right into our, after-appointment plans.
Yup, took hubby to a nice restaurant, got him all fed and satisfied, and we went and found store and I had a GOOD time. Was a little pricey for me, but so gorgeous in there, and the quilts hanging all over. When I got back in car, had to get out my paper and pen I always have with me, and jotted some 'new to me' ideas, I got for free in there, lol!
Hubby was very good, and I went as fast as I could and about the time he was getting restless, I was ready to go...best thing - the lady folded my fabrics and put them in an itty bitty bag, so it didn't look like I had spent so much :wink:
