I believe you use a darning foot for FMQ. I think that is what it's called. Mine looks like a circle and has a spring. It may be different looking for your machine. I have a Bernina 180E. I'm sure someone knows for sure.

Neither looks like the FMQ foot I use on any of my machines. Do you have a darning foot.

No :( I think my dd#1 has a walking foot but she's not going to be down till Friday and I was hoping to get started on the FMQ before then :( Besides "grid" quilting and hand quilting, how did ppl quilt before special feet?

By hand!

You do need a darning foot for FMQ, because you drop the feed dogs and move the material yourself. The walking foot is used with the feed dogs up, so the machine moves the material like it usually does. The walking foot just makes sure that the quilt is fed through evenly, and doesn't bunch up on the bottom due to uneven feeding.

I have a Janome and the darning foot that I use for FM came with it. Thats the circle thing with the spring except mine is open toed so I can see what I am doing more easily.

For FMQ, you need a "hopping" foot. This is a foot that "hops" between stitches to allow you to move the fabric. A darning foot is a hopping foot. This type of foot typically has a spring that allows the hopping.

The left foot in your photo is an embroidery foot and does not hop. I'm not sure what the other foot is, but it doesn't look like a hopping foot.

A walking foot can be used to quilt straight lines, or even wavy lines, but it cannot be used for free-motion quilting.

It looks like your Viking 6430 is a low-shank machine. This means that any generic low-shank darning foot should work. I think any JoAnn Fabric that has a sewing machine section would likely have this foot. Otherwise, you can go to http://www.sew4less.com and do a search for presser feet for the Viking 6430, and that will show you pages and pages of generic presser feet (including a darning foot buried in there somewhere).

If the feed dogs drop, you should be able to get a darning or free motion foot for that machine. I have a new Janome that I bought just for quilting. It's feed dogs do not drop, but I bought the available set of darning foot and a needle plate that covers the feed dogs.
