I thought I had at least opened and briefly examined every box and container I inherited from my dear mother, but.....last night I opened a container that held this treasure - hundreds and hundreds of 6 inch squares.
The only thing I can think of is she acquired these thru swaps at her quilting guild. There are sooooo many different prints, and I recognize only a few as fabric she had. This brings me to what I need from you dear friends. As a relatively new quilter I don't have any idea what to do with all these 6 inch squares. I know I can always make a simple scrappy quilt (or many) but are there patterns that start with many, many 6 inch squares? Also bear in mind I have already spotted a problem with accuracy in some of these squares, so I may end up with many, many 5 inch squares. Help me make a list of projects.........please!!! Some of the hundreds of squares - maybe over a thousand!?!?!?! |
You can use these for different types of blocks.
There are several patterns that you can use these "small pieces"... |
Wow! What a nice surprise! You can also cut them into half square triangles and make a scrappy quit with alternating squares and HST-no pattern needed for that. You's get lots of suggestions here-

Great find and treasure!

I would make a 9 patch.

You can cut them in 5 3/4" squares and make 4-at-a-time flying geese for an easy scrappy quilt. At least that's what I'm doing with mine, also gathered from swaps

Pinwheels. A 5 inch square makes a nice size pinwheel. Check the Moda Bakeshop for patterns using charms - they are 5". I am making a table runner by cutting the 5" blocks in half . I made a Disappearing Nine Patch with charms, too. D4P is another.

You will want a "one-patch" pattern, where all the squares are cut to the same shape, whether half-square rectangles, HS triangles, or something else, because then you don't have different amounts of the squares going into seam allowances. Have fun deciding! :D |
