foundation piecing Help needed

Can anyone tell me how to sew the LAST part of the star together. Here is the pattern I am using . . . it is an 8-point star.
Here is what I have from the right side: I sewed all the seams from the paperside and now I am left with one side of one of the star points that I cannot figure how to sew (other than by hand). I have never done this type of piecing before and am feeling pretty dumb -- especially since I've been quilting for about 45 of my 53 years. Sigh . . . Elizabeth |
The easiest way would have been to sew A to B, C to D, E to F, G to H. Then AB to CD, and EF to GH, that would give you two halves to sew together in one seam. The paper should have been cut apart by letters into triangles, making sure you added seam allowance and sewn together in the order I said.

A Lemoyne star foundation would be 8 separate wedges, individually paper pieced, then joined to form the star. The image you show can't be paper pieced as a whole. If it was a single PP foundation, there would not be repeating numbers. It would need to be split on the red lines as indicated. When you split it, you can see that each wedge has a section numbered 1, 2 & 3., indicating the order in which the pieces are to be added. Be sure to add seam allowance to the wedges. |
I think I'm starting to get this . . . I thought the whole idea was to piece everything on the paper . . . so it IS basically the way I've always done patchwork EXCEPT you use the paper to keep the small bits (and their seams and size) more consistent than just sewing the patches exactly the same way but without paper to stabilise them.
Thanks....good to know I can still learn new stuff . . . Elizabeth |
This would be better paper pieced then foundation pieced.

Piece each quarter section then join two quarters to make half of star then join the two halves. These sections are done off the paper.

so interesting... i just watched Fons & Porter this morning... They standard pieced this star in 4 smaller blocks and sewed them together like Kassaundra said. here's a link to the method/quilt on the show http://www.fonsandporter.com/blogs/b...ar-quilt-block

Where did you get the pattern? Weren't there instructions with it? Like has been said....four separate sections then sewn together.

Well I am chuckling and chortling at myself - this is the same good advice received when I decided to 'wing it' on a Lemoyne star without knowing what I was doing. (I was thankful the attempt came out flat...never mind matching points...) Looking forward to doing it the right way, and love this board.
