Foundation string quilts
 

I have been making string squares (log cabin) by sewing scraps on to a muslin foundation.
My question is do I use batting between the completed top and backing? It seems to make things a little stiff.
I would appreciate some suggestions/advice.

I always use foundation quilting rather than paper foundations. I like to use 200 count old sheets. I detest removing paper as it is tedious and often loosens stitching. Once the item is finished, I cannot see or feel a difference- especially after the quilt is laundered. Good luck with your project.

What kind of batting are you using? . I would use the thinnest batting I could find. Something like Quilter's Dream Request or Select. Or you can just use flannel. If you use flannel I would suggest washing it first.

Of course I made this foundation quilt without any instruction. I used thinnish cotton fabric for the base. I did sandwich as usual with batting. I don't notice a difference, but I will buy some muslin for next time.

I've made a couple string lap top size quilts and find once washed they soften up just nicely. I use them on my recliner when I watch TV at night. I used muslin plus batting and still not stiff, just right.

I always use batting and backing. Most often Hobbs heirloom 80/20 for string or any foundation pieced quilt top

I make string quilts without foundation. I was making them QAYG but got tired of that.

I did find a thin batting called Creme Rose, and it worked well. thanks to all who offered comments

Same here. The muslin works well for what I need.

Before the pandemic I purchased a bolt of good quality muslin from Hobby Lobby for this purpose.. Not sure they still offer it that way. It has a nice drape. I forget how many yards was on the bolt but it was well worth it.. Came out to no more than 2 dollars a yard, probably even less.

Do you really need batting? I think quilts without batting is called a Summer Quilt or a Counterpane. I've made quilts without batting. Muslim+fabric+backing is a lot already. Once quilted they are plenty warm for me.

Mother had a box of very thin curtain panels & I’ve been using them for foundations on my charity tops.

I use cotton voile as a foundation and it adds almost no weight to the block. Just a thought for next time.

I recently made several crumb blocks without any foundation - it worked but not as stable as I'd like it to be. Next time I make crumb or string blocks I will likely try either cotton viole or a super sheer muslin or featherweight interface. While paper probably works well - I do not enjoy the removing process. I appreciate hearing about all the different options and how they work for others.
