Four Patch Posy pattern
I have been reading and trying to understand the Four Patch Posy pattern. It is so confusing and the pictures are horrible. Do you stack the fabric in four layer repeats and cut squares?
|
I bought this pattern and some fabric for it 2 or 3 years ago and just dug it out today. I, too, am reading the instructions and seem to get more confused each time I read them. Maybe tomorrow it will sink in. Good luck with yours!

you stack four layers, pinning areas of print you can match through all the layers. then depending on how many repeats you can get from your fabric, you cut strips. like 12 inches between repeats would let you cut four 3 inch strips or three 4 inch strips. then cut squares from those strips (3 or 4 inches). then take those stacks of four sqs and have fun turning them and making four patch poseys. it's fairly easy.I made one quilt without the pattern. i didn't like it and gave it away. I got more info out of fellow quilters.
good luck. |

That's basically it. I have the Stacked Posie Supreme pattern, even more confusing.

I agree - I had the pattern and couldn't figure it out. Went back to the lqs I bought it at, and got the material there and she cut it in the four pieces and pinned it. So I could do. Not quilt I would do again.

I never had a pattern. It is just a version of a Stack and whack, only 4 layers thick. You can choose your own size for the squares. So what if it crosses over and is more than one repeat, I didn;t but there is no reason you can't do one big 4 patch posey and put smaller ones around it. I did use sashing between my 4 patch posies though not everyone I know has done that.

The four patch posie pattern is the worst cover front picture. It really is confusing and turns me off from ever buying that pattern. If I ever do a four patch posie, I'll refer to Bethany Reynolds's Stack n Whack and just stack four layers.
|
I did it without a pattern and found it kind of fun. I enjoyed playing with the squares and positioning them just so...
|
Thanks everyone for clearing it up for me. This designer shouldn't be writing pattern instructions.

I saw the quilt at a show and fell in love with it, so I bought the pattern. I think the vendor had taken their own picture of the quilt and taped it on the cover of the pattern. When I got home and opened the pattern, I lost ALL desire to make that quilt. The pictures were absolutely horrible. |
I took a class at the local quilt shop. I found a scrap of fabric that had 4 repeats and make a baby quilt using it. The print was cowboys and I have 25 fun blocks. Hats, hosters horses, boots etc. going in different directions. I think making the small quilt made it something I enjoyed and I know my grandson loved the quilt.

I don't think I would want to tackle it without a teacher

I've made one without realizing that was what I was doing!! As some others said, I just stacked 4 layers of fabric with the pattern lined up and cut the size square I wanted. Worked like a charm! Simple!! After I did my quilt, a friend had me pick the pattern up for her when I went to the quilt shop. I didn't look at it very hard when I realized I had been there, done that without knowing I was doing a 4-patch posie!!
|
After seeing it at the LQS a year ago, I did it without a pattern too ... just picked up bits and pieces of info from the Quilting Board!!
If you get the block too big, you're not going to see the kaleido so well. I cut my squares at 2-1/2". |

I hope you didn't give up on making Stacked Posies. I started mine yesterday. Our local quilting group gets together twice a month. Some of them were learning to make Stack n Wack which is done with an 18 degree ruler. I did my own thing ... Stacked Posies. Was wondering if I was just going to ruin a great piece of very large floral fabric. The repeat was 23.5 inches. I cut my fabric repeats into 3.5 inch squares and started spinning them to get the most interesting designs. It was so much fun. It is a work in progress that makes me giggle at the surprising designs! Scarey to start but so much fun and is real easy. The more I read my pattern the more confused I got so I left the darned thing home.

ONe of our retreat attendees was trying to make this pattern. We finally figured out the pattern had left out a whole set of instructions for putting the blocks into the quilt. She changed hers to fit and made the sashing in a different way.
Basically, it did not tell her to put borders around all four sides of the four patches and then construct the sashing and put the rows together. |
Thanks for sharing....I'm scouring the board right now for info on 4PP....this helps.

Very pretty, sak468! I've done a S&W before, and after seeing your photo, I get it (4PP) now. Thanks!
|
My guild is having a workshop to make the 4 patch ! No pattern necessary. Good thing as I threw mine in the fireplace and watched it burn! That's how frustrated I was with the instructions.

I had purchased that pattern and didn't like it. gave it away. I finally made one the way everyone kept talking about. it was easy. I intend to make more but must finish the first one that is waiting on me.

I just took a class in this pattern. Actually this is my 2nd class with the same teacher. She had us get the pattern but we never opened it. LOVE this pattern! Patches made by the other ladies were all very pretty. PM me if you want help with the directions. They are really not hard if you do not look at the pattern directions!t!!!i

Don't be afraid. This is so much fun. This is a sampling of the 50 I got out of my repeats. They are 8" blocks unfinished. After laying all of them out I only found two sets that are similar but not identical. So I have actually 48 entirely different blocks and 2 close tos. They may go on the back.

The 4PP certainly looks like it would be fun to do, and a lot less hassle than trying to get 6 or 8 repeats perfectly cut! I very much like the quilts everyone here has made!
Another experiment for my to-do list... Thank you! |
I am thinking of trying this, but I need to find the right fabric!
|
The 4 patch posy is a very easy pattern but more time consuming than simply cutting 4 patches. The layers have to match up, then cut.
|
Bellaboo is a member of my guild. She did make a 4 patch posy and it's beautiful. LOL

These are super fun. Bethany Reynolds has videos on how to cut and stack the fabrics... 4 layers for this one. Then cut strips and cross cut them into squares. It's as simple as that!
You put the same corner of all 4 repeats towards the center to make them appear like a kaliedoscope. |
Please don't give up. I taught myself by using youtube videos and then bought the book by Bethany Reynolds. S&W are my favorites. Once you reassemble the four smaller squares, you have a larger square that could be put in any pattern where a square is called for, like the middle of stars, etc. Four-patch triangles can be used in pinwheels that give the neatest effect. Also, if you don't like the way a square looks, you can keep turning them quarter turns and have a completely different look. Just make sure you get all of them the same way (ask how I know). You can use as alternating blocks with log cabins, etc. There is so much variation and I have seen some astonishing ones posted on here. The part I haven't ever totally figured out are the stacks mentioned in the book. But I just make up my own and go from there. Please keep trying to "get it." You can do this!

I have that pattern. Took a class several years ago at LQS and enjoyed it. Glad she was there to explain how to do it and what to look for when buying the fabric. It is time consuming but the results are beautiful, with the right piece of fabric. I want to do another quilt with this pattern but just never seem to find the time.
