I'm using a Coats & Clark variegated thread to zig zag an applique onto a quilt top but the thread is fraying. Is this a needle problem? If so, do I got to a larger needle or smaller? I've used the zig zag successfully on this machine on other projects, so I think it's the thread. Any suggestions?

Is your needle sharp? A dull needle will split thread causing it to fray and break. :)

I like using embroidery machine needles.. that might help

Try a new needle.......something else you might want to try is untread your machine and tread it again. Sometimes you think that you have the machine treaded correctly but you might have missed something. Hope this helps.

me, too. the eyes are longer and not as sharp against the thread. Quilting needles with the channel down the front should work, too. At one time, there was a great needle discussion here - try the search function and it should come up.

I had the same problem. Then I was told to put thread heaven in a V pattern on the thread spool. I also use a thread net. Also, a embroidery needle sz. 14. This helped me and no longer have any problem sewing with this kind of thread.

I've always been told that if the thread begins to fray and it isn't due to using a crummy thread (you know the kind that are 10 for $1), the first thing to do is check the size of the needle. Try a bigger needle and see if that helps. I hope that is it and it isn't a tension problem. Those tend to drive me insane and I don't wish that on anyone else!

I have to ask...what is "thread heaven"?

kathy 03-06-2008 04:19 AM

yes, inquiring minds want to know! we may need some if we knew what it is!

http://www.joann.com/static/project/0704/PA00223.pdf is a good explanation of needles, and which are best for different purposes.

Thread Heaven is a thread conditioner, comes in a blue plastic box on the notions wall.

Moonpi I too have used quilting needles for my embroidery thread and had no issues

I started using 'Thread Heaven' on a recommendation for my hand quilting, and continued with it ever since. It makes quilting much easier (and no, I wasn't paid to say that!). I’ve yet to try it on the machine but understand it works well.

One note: it was CC variegated that gave my hand quilting the fits to begin with.

I agree, I love Thread Haven and can't imagine doing my applique or hand quilting without it. I've never thought to use it with my machine.

Coats and Clark is notorious for fraying and leaving mounds of lint, especially darker colors. Try a bigger needle and better thread. Your worries will more than likely be over. Thanks. GiGi :D
