What I don't understand is this: Since you trim the blocks down why is it necessary to mark the fabrics?
Great pattern!

She didn’t trim off a lot so trying to keep it close to square. If you are off by more than 1/2 inch, your blocks will end up being smaller once you square.

It helps keep the resulting block closer to square. Otherwise it can get very wonky and you would have to trim off a lot to get a final square block.

I've made similar mosaic blocks. I think they look better with a bit of sashing between blocks. Somewhere to rest one's eyes.

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like you could eyeball it. But maybe not?

I'm thinking the same, Susie. I did a similar block years ago. I took a class and we didn't mark them we just eyeballed it. I didn't have to cut much off any of mine. Maybe if you didn't have a lot of experience it would be helpful to mark?

She squares 1/2 inch from the original size. There isn't wiggle room. Of course, you can square to any size you like.

Good point. Since she appeals to all levels of quilters that would make sense. I'm going to try one w/o marking and then I'll get my answer! :)

This is my understanding. Marking the strips and the cuts, help keep the block close to square, because we all know when you cut and sew angles, then flip open they could easily get wonky. I think if you don’t put marks and you’re off, you’d still have a block, but may have to square up to a smaller block. She’s not measuring her marks , just making registrations to align back fairly square. This is my opinion anyway. Have a great day-Toogie
BTW thanks for the video link.

I took a class once to make something like this. I didn't waste time using registration marks, just sewed each side to the strip and then trimmed.
