So what is your opinion on how much to FMQ a quilt? I recently finished a log cabin, and due to time constraints, I just did a large center design over each log cabin, with nothing in between. Then I did a simple design around each border. I keep looking at it and wonder if I should have done more. Too late now anyway, since it had to be done by today. But what do you all think about how much FMQ is enough? Better for simple and sparse, or intricate and plentiful?

I say, to each their own! Some people like lots of quilting, some don't! I think that it depends on the project. I seen some where the quilting was WAY over the top! I have seen some where it could use a little bit more. I think as long as you are happy, then it's PERFECT!! ;)

I think it also depends on how soft you want the quilt to feel. More quilting results in a stiffer quilt. I hand quilt and I do minimal just what the batting calls for as I like them soft.

I have never heavily quilted anything yet, but I think you just go with what you like. Some quilts just look better with alot of quilting....don't know if I'm that patient tho.

If it is a show quilt, they almost demand to be heavily quilted, as most show quilts are, if it is for your bed or sofa, as much or as little as you like.

I agree that it's a matter of taste, combined with your expected use of the quilt (a bed quilt could take more quilting because it's okay if it's stiffer). The design is also a factor. For a log cabin quilt, I don't think there's any need for a lot of quilting.

I usually don't heavily quilt. Mine are for beds and I want them to be soft and cuddly.
